Remember that time it took me 7 years to finish a Stargate fic? Yeah, odds are against me finishing a 30 day meme in anything like 30 days, but I will persevere. Probably.

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

Okay, well, I listed 49 fandoms on day two, so answering this exactly as asked would get seriously out of control. Instead, under the cut, my favorite characters to write from what I semi-scientifically conclude are my top ten current and past fandoms.

Playing favorites! )

Another boring day at work, and the post with the requests is about to fall off the end of my recent entries page, so: more drabbles!

For [livejournal.com profile] mrsronweasley, who was so kind as to not request a hundred words of Those Pirates You Told Me About.

Dief is, of course, a monkey (and not named Dief). )

[livejournal.com profile] shnaucl wanted Present day Don/Charlie, Charlie stuck in a tree.

Treed )

[livejournal.com profile] iuliamentis has only been asking for a Dead Like Me drabble for a month now, and she is my best friend, and after all it's true...

Reapers Need Hugs )

[livejournal.com profile] qe2 asked for Johnny/Walt/Sarah, prompt line "Cornflakes are good for the soul".

A mere two weeks late, my story for the Dead Zone Photo Challenge is finally up.

In addition to apologizing for lateness, I feel I ought to apologize for duplicating the name of Journey's well-known and lovely due South story: unfortunately, it's the only title that worked here, and this story has been ornery enough that I am not prepared to argue with it in such matters.

My assigned photos were these: photo 1 and photo 2.

Family Portrait (54k)
Johnny/Walt/Sarah. It was nothing like the way you actually felt when you watched home movies.
Warning: violence against children.

Oh, God, I'm HOME. Not that I don't love everybody I spent the last two weeks with, but I HAVEN'T BEEN HOME FOR TWO WEEKS OH MY GOD.

ahem.

Very belatedly: [livejournal.com profile] yuletide! My wonderful wonderful Dead Zone Walt/Johnny story, The Definition of Stupid, was written by [livejournal.com profile] tangeriner, who I adore! Thank you so very very much, Tangerine!

I myself also wrote a Dead Zone story for Yuletide: Sympathy for the Devil, Bruce/Johnny, for [livejournal.com profile] rivkat. Many many belatedly-public thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza and [livejournal.com profile] terrio for beta!

Apart from my (seriously awesome, go read it if for some reason you haven't) Yuletide story, I got some other very cool Christmas presents this year: my mom made me a fleece blanket with a pattern of bookshelves on it! And I got BOOKS! The kind with PAGES! And many many DVDs! And a can of olives! And a Morley Chocolate Peanut Butter Block (from myself)! And [livejournal.com profile] merryish showed me FIFTY-ONE episodes of CSI in three days! How awesome is THAT?

And now, because I know you're curious, what I think about while driving 600 miles in ten hours for the fourth time in six weeks. )

Oh my Lord. I got the BEST YULETIDE STORY EVER this year (except maybe for last year's).

Dead Zone! Johnny/Walt! The Definition of Stupid is 28k of brilliant, funny, plotty, sexy fic, and you should all go read it RIGHT NOW.

Thank you Yuletide Santa! YOU ROCK!

1. The Dead Zone

I am now up to episode 4x03 (yay reruns!) and (dammit, [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza) considering writing a follow-up to my last little DZ fic. Still trying to decide whether it's cool or scary to have landed in a fandom where rereading Eliot (just for a title idea, I swear) actually helps with plotting.

Also, for those of you who are also getting into DZ, [livejournal.com profile] versaphile is doing Dead Zone Resource posts! Because she is organized and helpful and apparently able to do more than FLAIL INCOHERENTLY in the direction of this show.

2. Numb3rs

[livejournal.com profile] audrarose wrote an incredibly hot little Don/Charlie for the recent ficathon, Absolution. She has made noises about a sequel, and I for one am about to die of waiting. "Absolution" is a fantastically vivid piece with a beautiful first-time moment and did I mention the HOT? And the potential SEQUEL? Go read.

And remember, everybody, New episodes of Numb3rs start this Friday, which means shiny new fun Open Threads over at [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_notice. If you're a Numb3rs fan and you're not on [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_notice, join now!

As promised, Dead Zone genfic. A post-"Finding Rachel" tag, to be precise. Bruce and Walt have a little talk.

Beta thanks to the one and only [livejournal.com profile] iuliamentis, hand-holder and comma-wrangler extraordinaire.

1. Actually went to SciFi Friday at [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf's for once.
1a. Actually saw an episode of BSG. Apollo and Starbuck are really just ungodly hot, aren't they?

2. Got up at eight in the morning on Saturday (give or take a few snoozes), took a shower, ate breakfast, printed out a stack of readings and problem sets, packed myself up and headed to campus to study with R and C.
2a. Realized it was a football Saturday, turned around, came home, went back to bed.

3. Went to IKEA with R and C
3a. Entertained the seating section. Further deponent sayeth not.
3b. Got R out of the store without letting her spend her rent money.
3c. Got R's bookshelf into C's car.

4. PIMPED [livejournal.com profile] lyra_sena INTO NUMB3RS HAHAHA I WIN!

5. (which is actually, like, 0, since it was Friday morning) Caught up to the USA rerun schedule for The Dead Zone, so have now seen up to the second episode of season four. My observations from the rest of season three: In snazzy cut-tagged bulleted-list form! )

6. Determined that the USA official website for The Dead Zone is nothing more nor less than a sign that the network loves us and wants us to be happy.

7. Stayed up until three in the morning writing pointless DZ genfic. Stay tuned. You know you want it.

8. Figured out how to do a bulleted list.

...Of course, this list conspicuously fails to include any kind of homework-related accomplishment, possibly because there weren't any. Well, that's what Monday is for...

So my Dead Zone season three torrent finally finished, and I have now watched the first three episodes, and OMG. I will cut tag in the quaint belief that I am not the last person alive to see this. )

It's possibly a little sad how much my mood, all day, has correlated directly to the progress of my bittorrent download of Season Three of The Dead Zone. The crushing agony of 0 seeds! The breathtaking triumph of 25 KiB/s downloads! The torrent and I are in an upswing right now, hence, whee! posting!

Also, I finished all of my reading for tomorrow. The cover letter, we will not speak of. Ha! The cover letter is done too!

Anyway, just in case any of you were wondering When Oh When I would write another Dead Zone fic short enough to be conveniently handwritten on an index card, the answer is last night at around 2 o'clock. A Whiff of Sulfur is my 227-word response to the [livejournal.com profile] dz100 "match" challenge.

A bit of context, in the form of what I suppose are the things most occupying my attention right now:

a) This presentation I have to give tonight, on an article written in 1977 emphasizing the individual and human side of library use. The author talked quite a bit about where people are on their individual "time-space continuum" and spent a couple of paragraphs repeating the phrase "living, breathing human" in every sentence. I was rolling my eyes pretty hard, and then I had a flash of insight: She sounded just like Hutch (remember that episode in season one where he refused to answer to "Zebra 3" and insisted on addressing the dispatcher as a "fellow warm human" or whatever?) - this was a 1977 thing! And once I put her in her appropriate historical context, the article was much less irritating. Except for the part where I have to present it tonight.

b) The Dead Zone. In fact, I finished season two yesterday (omg squee!!!!) and intended to watch my first downloaded episode of S3 last night before bed--except that I couldn't get the spiffy DVD-ripped .avi to actually play on any of my media viewers, so I had to trash that whole torrent's worth of episodes and find another one, and the only other option turned out, as of when I went to sleep, to be glacially slow (it has since sped up respectably). So I went to sleep a bit anxious about my next DZ fix.

Which is the only explanation I can come up with for the dream which featured, among other less-well-remembered elements, Starsky and Hutch standing in a ditch on either side of a crashed PT Cruiser painted red with a familiar flaring white racing stripe.

...So it turns out that school takes up a lot of a person's time. The other day? I was on campus for eleven hours and I checked my email once in that time. Once! I hardly even thought about porn (except when I thought the professor had brought it up as an example of a commodity, but as it turns out she said corn).

Anyway, I have been so remiss in posting that I haven't even GIPped appropriately. Herewith:

This icon of JJ's two daddies, and the lovely Johnny icon on this post, are both courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] sori1773, over at [livejournal.com profile] thedeadzone.

This one was made specially for me by [livejournal.com profile] fairmer from, I believe, a Genuine Photo From Scotland. She seemed to think it was particularly appropriate to me, apparently...

An icon just for music, by [livejournal.com profile] silverakira! Um, y'know. Now that I'm not over at [livejournal.com profile] ds_recs reccing music every Tuesday. Maybe I'll just have to share music here every Tuesday.

...Today's not Tuesday, right?
dira: Billy Tallent's life is so complex. (Billy - Complex by pearl_o)
So I'm sitting in the kitchen, doing some reading for my Thursday class, because the kitchen and living room, while technically shared space between me and Roomie, really tend to be left strictly alone by both of us. Or, now that I've taken over the living room for high-volume Dead Zone watching and the kitchen for homework, by Roomie, anyway. In any case, it's generally quiet and Roomie leaves me alone, as I do her, so I can do my homework at the kitchen table with no interruptions generated from outside my own brain.

...Except for the occasional loud burst of music from Roomie's room (the kitchen is bracketed between our bedrooms). And not just any music. Savage Garden. Apparently she is partying like it's 1999. Halfway through the track, she abruptly turns it back down, and there's just a faint babble of what sounds like TV. I go back to my reading. Ten minutes later, another, different Savage Garden song blares out. I sit and stare at the wall. Once again, halfway through the track, it's abruptly turned down.

Anyway. Due South fans! Identify what is wrong (or right) with this sentence that made me laugh out loud in the middle of a fairly dull study about helping engineers effectively use libraries, c.1968.
In those intances where this was not the case, the librarian's approach is that the inquirer (a) knows what he wants, (b) knows more than the librarian, and (3) is aware of the search strategies necessary to satisfy his need.

...the italics, which are in the original, are a lot funnier out of context.

My reading also included a brief discussion of the problem of empirically determining whether a user seeking information finds it "passively" (by consulting his/her own memory) or "actively" (by consulting an external source). This led me to stare out the window for several minutes contemplating whether Johnny Smith would be said to acquire information "passively" or "actively" when he touches someone, and whether it changes if they touch him, and what visiting libraries is like for him. Hi, I'm a big, big dork.
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Default)
1) Stella is in Maine, working for the National Weather Service!
2) Zoe (Johansson, not the one from the future) is the mom of a kid at JJ's school! I suppose this means things with her and Johnny (Johansson, not the one with the visions) didn't work out...

3) OMG OFFICIALLY DEAD OF SQUEE.
3a) Walt and Bruce always team-lift Johnny when he's fallen down. I wonder if they have designated sides? I should go back and rewatch, um, all the episodes, to check that.
3b) HUGGING! Johnny and JJ hugging! JOHNNY AND WALT HUGGING!

4) Johnny needs to not ever lie to Walt. It makes me sad, and it makes Walt angry.
4a) Walt is really hot when he's angry. Also when he's holding a gun. Also when he's being a woobie.
4b) I love Walt a lot.

5) Bruce's dad has apparently given Bruce and Johnny his blessing! Yay for familial approval!
5a) Dude, I'm sorry, did I suffer a head injury and go to slashers' La La Land, or did they just devote an entire episode to how Johnny would not survive without Bruce?

6) Walt! Did I mention I love Walt a very lot? And Bruce? And Sarah? And Dana?
6a) It's a really good thing Johnny has that king-size bed. Yes it is.

7) Time elapsed from first watching The Dead Zone to arrival of first deeply regrettable bunny: one week. Dammit, brain...
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Default)
Halfway through watching season one of Dead Zone with [livejournal.com profile] lyra_sena, I finally recognized the niggly resemblance thing: in certain angles and with certain facial expressions, Anthony Michael Hall was somehow managing to bear a striking resemblance to Michael Douglas. When I started watching season two, I had a whole new niggly resemblance sensation, and now I've got it: Tim Robbins. Which only makes me love Johnny more.

Also? I LOVE JOHNNY A WHOLE LOT.

But! Not as much as I love whoever's responsible for continuity. That person, I want to have their babies. Holy God the continuity is a thing of beauty here, people.

Also also, if I have to watch one more episode where Johnny's two boyfriends trail around after him exchanging those looks that say, "Why do we put up with this again? Are you sure the sex is that good?" I MAY VERY WELL DIE OF THE SQUEE.

I'm just saying.

PS - Not that this is my number one happy pairing threesome choice for this fandom, but--where is the nastyhot Johnny/Dana/Max? Sheerly as a matter of intellectual curiosity, of course.

[livejournal.com profile] midsummer_fic authors are now revealed, and, more importantly, my internets are once again operational, so now I can properly thank [livejournal.com profile] sprat for the awesome story she wrote me! Thank you muchly, Sprat!

The story I wrote, for [livejournal.com profile] aerye, was The Evening and the Morning (27k), and, as will be apparent if you click the link, it is now available on my site.

I've also updated my site with the All Your Time Waiting (4k), the story I posted for the recently-ended [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction Songfic challenge, and, uhm, Handiwork (3k), a little snippet of Dead Zone fic I wrote because [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza asked so nicely.
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Default)
Am home from spending the night at [livejournal.com profile] lyra_sena's, and happily Roomie was not around when I wandered in at 4pm, unshowered and wearing 75% yesterday's clothes, carrying most of a six-pack of Molson in a plastic bag, so I didn't have to have that conversation.

So, here's my fannish timeline of the last few days:

Thursday night: download [livejournal.com profile] astolat and [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's Dead Zone vid, since everybody was talking about it. Watch vid. Thirty seconds into vid, think "I bet this show is on Mininova." Begin download of season one.

Friday morning: Determine that download is complete. Decide to just check the first file, to see if the quality if viewable, before I hop in the shower and go out to run errands. Watch entire pilot episode (the VERY FIRST EPISODE starts with CHILDREN PLAYING HOCKEY. CHILDREN. PLAYING HOCKEY. I HAD NO CHANCE.) before finally taking shower. Start download of season two. Finish reading book instead of running errands. Watch second episode.

Friday evening: Tear self away from Dead Zone to go to squee meeting at [livejournal.com profile] molly_o's, hang out with Molly and [livejournal.com profile] cmshaw and [livejournal.com profile] smaragdgrun and [livejournal.com profile] rubyrosered and Ruby's friend whose lj name I didn't catch. Learn that people who write dirty HP chan-porn are TOTALLY NOT SHOCKED when you talk about Numb3rs and incest, yay!

Late Friday night: Get home around 2am. Watch just one two episodes of Dead Zone before going to sleep.

Saturday morning: Run overdue errands. Sit down at computer to reward self with YET MORE DEAD ZONE episodes, but receive IM from [livejournal.com profile] lyra_sena asking if I want to come hang out.

Dira: I, uh, just started downloading a couple of seasons worth of Dead Zone, so I've been watching that a lot.
Lyra: OMFG
Lyra: DEAD ZONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Lyra rented the second half of season one, and I went down there and watched it with her YAY. Two very entertaining things happened in episode eleven: Johnny said "It's a good thing I have a king size bed," (yes, Johnny, YES IT IS) and I determined that in the course of his career, Callum Keith Rennie has played characters named Johnny (Johansson, speaking of injured ex-hockey players...), Walt(er "Duck" McDonald), and Bruce (Spencer, in that one episode of Forever Knight). It's probably only a sign that Callum works a lot, and that I'm easily impressed by stupid coincidences when I've had a couple of beers. But YAY!

Sunday morning: Lyra observed that she had Netflixed the first six episodes of the 4400. I suggested that we should watch it. We both sat down saying "Y'know, I need another fandom like I need a hole in the head." Four episodes later, after we'd both gotten choked up at least once, I finally tore myself away to come home.

So, yeah. Two new fandoms in four days, and the sad thing is I don't even think it's the first time I've done that.
