A couple of weeks ago I went running for the first time in a couple of months (I run outside, so ice and cold and snow are serious deterrents and, yeah, next year maybe a gym membership for the winter) and ... I didn't actually do anything I could perceive, I just came up lame all of a sudden, and after that my foot hurt to even walk on for several days.

The first or second night after it happened, I had a dream about taking a long bicycle trip.

Yes, thank you subconscious, I have cracked your code. Maybe it would be better to take up a non-impact activity at least temporarily.

Last night I spent a lot of time staring at my Generation Kill wolf-verse Iraq story, which I had skipped out of working on for a few days in favor of scribbling away at Teen Wolf kidfic. I also spent some time talking (whining) to the very patient [personal profile] petra and [personal profile] iulia about how much I didn't want to work on the Iraq story and how I knew I needed to finish it and how I was grimly determined but wahhhhhhhh. Etc.

Last night, I dreamed I was re-enlisting in the Marines, complete with two dude Marines following me up to the table to sign both leering at me and joking (I felt coolly superior to them, as I outranked them, which they would realize once we were all back in uniform) and standing tall at attention, determined to show no fear, while a bored officer warned me that there was a fifty percent chance the gas mask drill I had to do as part of the fitness test for re-enlisting would involve actual gas of some kind.

Yes, subconscious. I GET IT. I'm going to do this, and I'm going to do it well, even if parts of it suck and hurt. YES. OKAY.

1) Just realized the other day that I have been conflating the Lymond Chronicles and the Liaden series into some sort of sword-and-sorcery woobie-centric fantasy series for the last fifteen years. I gather that ... no.

2) Also realized today that the reason I was not especially surprised/impressed by the Avengers helicarrier wasn't because they'd already shown it in another movie or because I was spoiled for it but because of The Master's helicarrier thing. So I am retroactively surprised/impressed, SHIELD! That was pretty cool!

3) Tonight one of the members of my book group passed around the Lord of the Rings Pez dispenser set she got for Christmas. I got Aragorn! :D!

4) IS IT TIME FOR THE LORD OF THE RINGS MARATHON FOR IULIA'S BIRTHDAY YET? (Signs point to no: her birthday is not until February.) BUT MAYBE IT IS TIME TO GO SEE THE HOBBIT AGAIN.

5) Having managed to write 750+ words on each of the last six days (today will make seven unless something goes bad wrong in the next three hours), I am cautiously optimistic that I have passed out of the Christmas/sick/New Year's/discombobulated three-week Slough of Writing Despond. But I am still not done with anything.

Yet.
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Ray - Ready to Go)
1) I have not only lured [personal profile] kass into reading and watching Generation Kill, now she's written fic! Check out her awesome Nate/Brad combat jack porn: Fantasy.

2)

Oh yeah, that's the 750words.com Nano badge and it is MINE. I wrote 50,000 words in 27 days, writing at least 750 words every single day. \o/

...I am still not even close to being done with ANYTHING. /o\
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Derek and Stiles - up against the door)
But this one is mine. :D

Ahem.

Beauty and the Beast (ish) AU: 40,312 words.
Events in outline before Big Finish: 12
Number of them labeled "montage": none!

So I think I just have to accept that I have some kind of weird pacing instinct for stories around 65,000 words, and this is one of those stories. And I am probably not going to get the next 25,000 words written this weekend.
dira: Allison Argent, smiling delightedly (Allison - Smile)
Instead of doing proper NaNo this year, I'm doing a NaNo-like thing called "Trying to get the Nano badge on 750words.com." The Nano badge is available any month of the year if you manage to write 50,000 words in a month without ever missing a consecutive day of writing at least 750 words. That makes it sound like it's the hardcore version of NaNo, but on the other hand I've totally thrown out all the actual novel-writing rules, so so far I've worked on three different stories--my [livejournal.com profile] tw_holidays one and "Being Found" and this ridiculous monster of an AU--and all of that counts for my total.

I'm a day and a half ahead of Nano pace right now, though, and I'm hoping to run up my score a little further tonight.

Meanwhile, after two weeks of moderately frantic writing, this morning I had a dream about getting beta comments from [personal profile] iulia. (She was, as she usually is, totally right: the treehouse with built-in stereo system was totally over the top.)
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Default)
Wolf-verse fic: 55,473 words

BUT! HERE IS THE THING!

I HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I AM WRITING ABOUT THE TIMESPAN OF THE MINISERIES, YOU GUYS. I'M NOT WRITING ONE BULLET AWAY FANFIC ANYMORE.

:D :D :D
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Derek - Red-eyed)
Teen Wolf Beauty and the Beast AU: 20,155 words.
Stiles: still doing all the talking.
Outline: still nonexistent.
End: still not actually in sight.

I have sort of a hazy idea of the next several things that happen, and I know most of the things that need to happen in order to wrap the story up, and I'm feeling quite blithely unconcerned about getting to all those things in the proper order, but it feels a little bit weird to be writing something which has, now, definitely attained the size of a Serious Story without having an actual outline for it. I can tell that I'm in the middle part now, and that there is a late-middle part coming up soonish, and then a cascade of events which will constitute the end, but I'm not really sure how long any of it will take. Huh.

In somewhat-related news, yesterday I scored a personal Writing Bingo, in which I managed to add at least a paragraph to all five of the stories I currently have in progress. (Two Teen Wolf, two Generation Kill, one Vorkosigan.) So that was ... something.
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Stiles - open-mouthed)
My Derek/Stiles Beauty and the Beast (ish) AU topped 10,000 words today.

I am pretty sure the story has actually started now.

...Oh God this is going to go on for a while. /o\
dira: Derek Hale, alone in the woods and shirtless as usual. (Derek - alone in the woods)
1) If you take five thousand people from all over the world, from infants to old dudes on motorized scooters, and put them all in a hotel together for a long weekend, and no one is sleeping enough or eating right and a pretty large proportion of everybody is drinking every night, con crud happens! And if you are in a prominent public-contact position like the information desk, it will probably happen to you!

Alternately, if I hang out a lot with [profile] daveamongus when he has a cold, by the end of the weekend I will probably have the same cold.

2) The Derek/Stiles fic full of pack feels that was not any of the things I meant to write last week is now over ten thousand words and the porn has not yet actually commenced. But I am still convinced I can finish it tonight.
dira: Derek Hale, alone in the woods and shirtless as usual. (Derek - alone in the woods)
...or wolf's den, or whatever.

So I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] tw_holidays! And you should too! :D It's set up so that signups are running now (until September 10, so you have a couple of weeks to consider your options) and stories are due around Thanksgiving, which means it doesn't conflict too badly with Yuletide! And! Teen Wolf holiday exchange! Which does also seem open to RPS! :D :D :D

The signup form also includes the coolest feature I've seen yet in an exchange: when signing up you have the option to identify, by lj name, someone you trust who your writer can check in with if they have questions about your story preferences. So if I get fic that is exactly suited to [personal profile] iulia's interests, I will know why. *g*

Meanwhile, last week I spent some time writing up a series of numbered lists of what to work on writing-wise: short-term goals, long-term goals, things it would be good to work on for different reasons, things that were in some way time-sensitive.

This led directly to starting a new story which was not on any of those lists on Sunday night. \o?
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Darien - d'oh by gilkurtis)
Someone please tell me that I do not need to write fic about Derek and Isaac Between 2x02 and 2x03 )

Because I don't have time to write that while also writing the AU where everything happens differently in the pilot so Stiles gets to be the main character. In a Beauty and the Beast AU. /o\

Uh, and also my warbigbang wolf-verse fic! And the next Aral/Jole story which I have figured out and/or sufficiently lowered my expectations for so it's finishable now! And the other Teen Wolf thing I'm not writing. And wee!Tony.

/o\ /o\ /o\
dira: Nate Fick, keeping his chin up (Nate - Chin Up)
And he knows that I am not right at all. To wit:

This morning I went (very slowly) running for the first time in ages and then I figured I'd make it a clean sweep of doing stuff I mean to do on Sundays but usually don't, so I went to church.

I'm an ex-Catholic atheist, so the church in question is Unitarian Universalist (deeply unscientific polling** indicates that UU is the place to go when you're done being Catholic but still want somewhere to hang out on Sunday mornings). I don't have anything I would call a spiritual practice, but I like going to church for kind of the same reason I like running and seeing movies in theaters: it forces me to monotask, to actually focus on what I'm doing rather than getting lost in the internets or whatever story currently occupies my mind. During the quiet moment at the start of the service my mind started gravitating to Nate, trying to figure out an upcoming bit of story, and I reeled myself in, focusing on the present. The woman leading the service even said something about letting go of what prevents you from being fully present, and I thought, ha, yes! Get thee behind me, semi-fictional Marines!

So we had a guest speaker: an Army officer who is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and who closed his talk with a story about his experience at SERE.

I am forced to consider the very real possibility that Jesus-Asterisk is fucking with me.

* Jesus-Asterisk being, you know, a shorthand for whatever omniscient universal thing there may or may not be, to which I feel no especial obligations of religious practice.

** By which I mean I was once in a not-purposefully-selected group of six UUs where five of us were former Catholics and the sixth was still going back and forth between a Catholic church and UU.
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Nate - Watchful)
...because I finally remembered the thing I really wanted to post.

I got "99 Luft Problems" stuck in my head this morning (I, uh, have never actually heard the not-mashed-up version of "99 Problems" but know, if not actually all the words, all the words that are in the mashup) and I realized that the mostly accurate capslock summary of my wolf-verse bigbang fic is, indeed:

NATE HAS 99 PROBLEMS AND A BITCH IS MOST OF THEM.
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Default)
1) After long consideration I have concluded that in the wolf-verse instead of being called Fruity Rudy, when Rudy gets all worked up about the Old Ways the guys are prone to call him Hrotholfr. Naturally.

2) I just realized that the obvious name-smush for Nate/Brad is FILBERT. :D

3) The less said about the amount of time I spent today studying the flora, fauna, terrain, weather, and prevailing winds of certain desert areas of California, the better.
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Nate - Watchful)
Wolf-verse warbigbang:

10,626 words. (Uh, not all written since my last post. I had already started a while ago.)
4 scenes left in Act I.
4 acts left after that.
Current benchmark: start Act II before the end of June.
Days to rough draft deadline: 92.

Panic level: I had a brief but horrible nightmare last night about being under fire in a Humvee with my mom and two younger brothers. Let's hope that was a freak thing and not a sign of what I can expect of my mental state for the summer while immersed in this story. Or, you know, in terms of anybody being in horrible danger. o.O
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Nate - Watchful)
Sooooo [livejournal.com profile] warbigbang signups are open! And I signed up!

...And now I am going to try to write a hundred thousand words of wolf-verse in three months (and two days). And, at the end of those hundred thousand words written in three months, actually be at the end of the story and within betaing distance of being ready to post.

ahahahahaahahahahahaaha o.O
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Ray - Ready to Go)
But not like that.

ETA: I don't know why my Ray icon isn't on LJ, but the icon that's supposed to be on this post is Ray. Just to clarify. The shirtless Brad icon actually is relevant like that.

Analysis of today's writing (so far) on the babyfic )
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Nate - Watchful)
GK babyfic: 20,784 words
Dudes who have kissed each other: 0
Kisses administered to baby: all of them.
Important events left in the "sequence of events" list I made: 8.5
Number of them that are Talking?: 2. (This is not a tightly-outlined kind of story.)
Number of them that are definitely sex scenes: 1 (...Hope you like cuddles.)

Amount of time I have spent pondering stuff that happens way, way after the end of the story instead of writing the goddamn story: Let's not even talk about it. (Unless you are on IM in which case LET'S SPEND LOTS OF TIME TALKING ABOUT IT SO I DON'T HAVE TO WRITE.)

WIP meme!

(Dreamwidth only: Random icon is random and also a reminder from the universe that I need to get started on my Lupercalia story. Speaking of WIPs.)

WIP Meme! Because, let's face it, I am constitutionally incapable of letting this one go by without participating.

From [personal profile] misspamela: Post a random sentence (or three whole paragraphs) from every WIP you're currently working on, even if it's very short. Then invite people to ask questions about your WIP. With any luck, you'll get talking about writing, and the motivation to take that WIP one step closer to completion will appear as if by magic!

Naturally I am going for the "three whole paragraphs" option. Feel free to ask questions! Even if they are more of a comment than a question.
