Hey, look, almost a week since my last post. I've been, um, really busy - actually doing work at work more often than not, and busting out eight thousand words on the hockey AU since Friday. Too bad I'm not actually getting any closer to the end.

Anyway, the other day I managed to wrench my brain free of the hockeyhockeyhockey (It was, seriously, about three minutes. I was making ramen.) for long enough to have a thought about Joe Dick

I was thinking, actually, about the little start I made, a while back, on The Very Secret Diary of Billy Tallent, and the little sniping diarist Billy voice in my head said, Joe, haven't you noticed you sold out to do this tour? I hope Bruce makes a million dollars off this movie just to fucking spite you. Except, I thought, staring at the noodles, that probably didn't happen, in their reality, in the reality where that actually was a real documentary - in fact, judging by the German over the credits, it was probably never even released in North America, because...

Because Joe shot himself on Bruce's film stock, just like he pissed in Seymour Stein's G&T. Try and sell that, you corporate weasel.

Did Joe sell out by agreeing to do the movie in order to finance that tour? Maybe kinda, which for Joe probably just meant yes. That was the length he was willing to go to to get Billy back (oh, you know it's all about Billy) - he sold out to a cheap indie director (hookers and taxicabs, not models and limos; Joe didn't price himself too high) to fund a tour to keep Billy around.

And then Billy's leaving - then Bruce tells Joe that Billy is leaving (anybody else think Billy would have been willing to timeshare, just like he said he would in the beginning when he agreed to the tour in the first place? anybody else think that, Jenifur contract or no, Billy would never have escaped Joe's gravity well if Joe were still alive?)

It's not Bruce saying it that pushes Joe over the edge. But that starts the chain reaction - from the revelation to the fight, from the fight to Billy walking away to Joe sitting alone on the steps with just that fucking director and camera man for company, gloating over how they beat him at this game.

I don't know that Joe actually killed himself just to spite Bruce - I'm sure Joe had lots of reasons. (I'm kinda partial to the idea that Joe realized that Billy was never really going to escape him while he lived, and killed himself as a grand romantic gesture of emancipation. That may just be me.) But I think that he had one reason for doing it that way, and I think it was one last effort to regain his punk integrity. If he couldn't have Billy anymore, at least he could have that. At least he could go down fucking somebody else's shit up.

.

But I dunno; maybe my brain is getting all mooshy from malnutrition - I understand ramen will do that. Whaddya think?
