He listens long enough to hear Monument, Colorado and then he hangs up, pulls back onto the road and starts driving.

2) And furthermore, the author of Two Heroes (Small Town Girl Remix) is revealed as the fabulous jae_w!

3) Apparently print sources documenting the usage actually prefer "didn't use to" to "didn't used to".

4) Yeah, I just put the period outside the quotation mark.

5) Yeah, everything I'm trying to write is stuck so bad I'm googling stuff like "didn't use to" tense construction and checking out the Google Books results.

Yes, unquestionably. The past-tense marker goes on the auxiliary, not the main verb, and certainly not on both of them: didn't want to (not "didn't wanted to"), didn't like to (not "didn't liked to"), didn't use to.

Yeah, it occurred to me that "didn't used to" might be due to overcorrection or people being stuck on the idiomatic nature of the positive "used to" or ... something. Anyway, good to have the editor's word on that. :)

I can make a good solid syntactic case for "didn't use to" being 'better' than "didn't used to" -- past marker only needing to go on the aux or the verb, not both, don't you know -- but it feels so awkward and awful that I'd avoid the issue entirely by changing it to "never used to". [dusts off hands][g]

In the event, I looked it up because I'd used it in an IM conversation, so not so much subject to style editing. :)
