NORTH & SOUTH YOU GUYS

YOU GUYS. NORTH & SOUTH.

So I'm at [personal profile] iulia's celebrating her birthday, and we'd agreed a while back to watch North & South at this juncture because Richard Armitage. Wikipedia informed me that his performance had been compared to Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy; otoh I had the vague impression from Tumblr or something that it was kind of grim.

:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

1. Okay yes some people died? Several, I guess? But mainly in all-for-the-best-not-suffering-anymore ways except for that one guy who was kind of a dickbag anyway.

2. OH MY GOD JOHN THORNTON AND HIS FEELINGS. WHICH HE FEELS. ALL THE TIME. RIGHT ON HIS FACE. AND ALSO IN ACTUAL WORDS. ALLLLLLLL THE TIIIIIIIIME. I CANNOT EVEN HANDLE ALL OF HIS FEELS.

3. Neither can Margaret, who is SUCH A SPACETOASTER OH HONEY. What is with these feelings and the whole idea of touching and WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP PROPOSING TO HER SHE JUST WANTS TO BE FRIENDS OKAY. AND MAYBE BRING YOU A BASKET IF YOU ARE THE SORT OF PERSON TO WHOM A GENTLEWOMAN BRINGS BASKETS. WHY WON'T ANYONE JUST TELL HER THE RULES IN A RATIONAL MANNER SO THAT SHE MAY FOLLOW THEM AND NOT UPSET PEOPLE.

Oh my God I just want to pat her on the head.

4. The whole collison of industrialization and this old pastoral class system, and the way that Margaret has this noblesse oblige, and expecting Thornton to fit into that model in one place only to find him somewhere else entirely, and is trying to condescend kindly to her inferiors while none of them are having any of it is just so... there is so much there to be fascinated by.

5. Awwwww, trade unionists. And Thornton growing into the pre-widespread-union-era model of a paternalist captain of industry a la the stories I grew up hearing about Henry Ford. And the friendship Thornton develops with Higgins is just--AWWWWWWWWWW GUYS. I should probably not just feel warm and fuzzy over that chapter of history, but between living in Wisconsin and growing up in the Detroit area, just. Awwwwwww, unionists.

6. Oh my God the tragic love story of Dixon and Mama Hale. ;_______________________;

7. SO OKAY I GUESS ALL HALES ARE FAILBOATS IN EVERYTHING?

8. DO I LOVE IT MORE WHEN SHE KISSES HIS HAND OR WHEN HE PUTS HIS HAND ON HER FACE OH WAIT I LOVE IT MORE WHEN THEY MAKE OUT ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE NORTH ON THE TRAIN. MAYBE THEY SHOULD STOP AND GET MARRIED SOMEWHERE, OR JUST KEEP GOING TO SCOTLAND OR WHATEVER VICTORIANS DID WHEN THEY WANTED TO GET MARRIED IN A HURRY. <3_____________________________<3

9. So should I read the book?

And now on to today's viewing experience: the long-awaited LOTR marathon! :D :D :D

OH MY GOD YES, this miniseries and this book are SO AMAZING IN EVERY WAY, and like, the book is perfect and brilliant forever and I cannot even with how amazing it is, and then the miniseries SUCCESSFULLY CAPTURES the book's awesome, only with more gorgeous artistic shots of fluff in the air at the mills and so forth, and UGH I CANNOT EVEN WITH HOW AWESOME. In conclusion: yes you should defs read the book.

I don't have the words (or the emoticons) to tell you how I feel about that series.

HAND KISSING. AND THORNTON'S SMILE. AND HIS SUPER SERIOUS INTENSE GAZE.

Guh. Now I want to watch it all over again.

Oh man. A Teen Wolf AU would be so brilliant. Thornton is such a Derek Hale it's not even funny. And Stiles would be the flaily version of Margaret. And his dad and Derek would be friends. And Scott would be all I WILL REBEL AND NOT LIVE UNDER THIS ALPHA'S RULE. And Stiles would be so torn.
