Generation Kill PTSD babyfic coda: The Frame You Made (2/6)

Entirely unrelatedly, I just went to my local SF book group for the first time in months, and they are great, and it was great, and now I am home with a gin drink that didn't really need that second dollop of gin, and also a big bunch of green grapes, so things are going really pretty well around here.

And now, more fic! Chapter 2 takes place in October 2005, when Nate and Brad Have A Talk. Thanks once again to templemarker and oliviacirce for beta! <3

The Frame You Made (7269 words) by Dira Sudis
Chapters: 2/6
Fandom: Generation Kill
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick
Characters: Nate Fick, Brad Colbert, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Kid Fic, Future Fic, Curtain Fic
Summary:
(Eventually) six further epilogues for Don't You Shake Alone.

comments

Generation Kill PTSD babyfic coda: The Frame You Made (1/6)

So yesterday was the second birthday of my Generation Kill PTSD babyfic, Don't You Shake Alone, and for the occasion I decided to start posting my coda fic as a WIP. (I keep getting distracted by certain shiny metal objects, so I'm hoping the WIP thing will prod me along through actually finishing this before never.)

When I was writing Don't You Shake Alone, I started out with this very firm and specific idea about what I was going to do as an epilogue to that story, and I really loved the epilogue idea and I spent so much time happily plotting and refining the epilogue, and eventually I realized that that epilogue a) was going to be really impractically long for an epilogue and b) taking place, as it would, seven and a half years after the main action of the story, would require about six other epilogues to set it up. So then I wrote the epilogue the story actually has, instead, which very neatly tied off the story as it was and did not go starting up some whole other story, introducing new characters, etc.

But, you know, that was still the epilogue of my heart and I still wanted to write it, still MEANT to write it, and now I am actually writing it, by way of all the other epilogues required to set it up.

So with many thanks to everyone who's been involved with this story since 2012, and especially to templemarker and oliviacirce for betaing this story now, here's chapter one!

The Frame You Made (3299 words) by Dira Sudis
Chapters: 1/6
Fandom: Generation Kill
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick
Characters: Nate Fick, Brad Colbert, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Kid Fic, Future Fic, Curtain Fic
Summary:
(Eventually) six further epilogues for Don't You Shake Alone.

comments

Meme: February 20: wolves in the piano, wolves underneath the stairs

February 20: kass asked me to write about wolves.

The thing about wolves, essentially, is that they are simultaneously soft and cuddly and dangerous killing machines. That is the id-appeal of them to me. Psychic wolves and wolf-shaped werewolves more so than actual wolves, of course.

I first got acquainted with psychic wolves when I read A Companion to Wolves shortly after it came out, and on the first reading especially, I felt very much like the target audience for the book in a way that I didn't feel like the target audience for most fantasy or science fiction I read: it was queer feminist hurt/comfort that put a woobie boy front and center for me to love. In the course of time I read the second book and got rather less enchanted, but by then I had already begun on the long road to writing psychic wolves into Generation Kill, so they were in a way mine now, and disliking a book about them could not make me stop loving psychic wolves.

Adding wolves to GK was a way to do a bunch of fun things in that universe: I could have a world where DADT was not a big thing, and homosexual activity was an inherent part of military service, and still build a situation where there was a reason Nate and Brad really, really couldn't have a relationship while serving together. It also allowed me to make literal and external the "warrior spirit" that Brad talks about in the miniseries (totally unironically, oh Brad, ♥) and generally up the stakes in a bunch of situations--Trombley isn't just a weirdo, he's a flashpoint for the whole unit.

Also, so many wolf-cuddles. ♥_______♥ Heat-shack sex was really just a hurt/comfort-y bonus.

I am likewise super into the actual-wolf-form of werewolves because a) so much more aesthetically pleasing than the Teen Wolf ~beta shift~ with the sideburns and whatnot, and b) did I mention wolves can be cuddly. The Boy and the Beast was basically just a 117,000-word ode to how great it would be to cuddle with a wolf, because, did I mention, cuddles are relevant to my interests. As are wolves. :D

comments

Meme: February 19: Generation Kill and the border of reality

February 19: _whiskers asks, do you consider GK an RPF fandom? Why or why not?

Hmmm. Mostly yes--there are real guys with these characters' names, and it's their real lives I and my fellow GK fandomers are basing fic on. I personally certainly have written copious amounts of One Bullet Away fanfic under the banner of GK fandom.

At the same time, we're all definitely working off the HBO fictionalized versions of these guys, and the packaged, memoir-ized versions, plus the slightly less filtered RPF fodder of information about their lives that have trickled out in the years since the miniseries. I feel like it's definitely an RPF fandom at a slightly greater remove than most things that you would unquestioningly call an RPF fandom--maybe a bit more like writing fic about My Chemical Romance's Danger Days personas than writing fic about them directly, as a vague analogy. It's Stark Sands and Alexander Skarsgard who I picture when I'm picturing Nate and Brad having sex, not Nate Fick Actual and Brad Colbert Actual, so in that way there is a difference. The way I ship these guys has a lot to do with acting and directing choices from the miniseries, less to do with anything that comes from the Actual Guys Themselves.

And all of that said, I have bounced between RPF and FPF so long, and have worn down so many of my moral lines about which is okay and which isn't, that I find the question of whether or not it's an RPF fandom mostly uninteresting. I know that people who are in the fandom operate in different places along a spectrum of engaging with information about the real guys in fiction--many people deliberately use fictional names for their family members, reject the ~canon~ of what we know about their real lives post-2008, and of course this is also the root of a lot of the keep-it-secret-keep-it-safe attitude of the fandom--and I'm okay with meeting people wherever they are with that. For me I write it in a pretty-RPF-y way and I'm comfortable doing so.

I will say that back in bandom, when the fourth wall was getting punctured in various ways (VickyT commenting on fic about her! Pete Wentz's everything!) I realized that my point of anxiety about real people finding the fic I wrote about them was not that they would be upset by it (because whatever, if you don't want to read fic about yourself don't read fic about yourself, you're an adult) but that they would know what I got wrong. With the GK guys I don't even feel like I need to worry about that. Although...

...So maybe I should be more concerned, but idk, that seems like a pretty supportive reaction. :)

comments

Meme: February 5: Brad and Nate walk into a small town in California....

There are still some dates open later in February if anyone wants to suggest a post! :)

February 5: cattraine asks, So what would happen if GK's wolf brothers Brad and Nate stopped by Beacon Hills on a full moon night?

Hmmm. So Nate (looking full-bore civilian although vaguely familiar) and Brad (in civvies but still with his hair clipped tellingly short) wander into a diner in Beacon Hills with Frost and Bo on a full moon night. Strangers with wolves, not in uniform, ring a few bells, and before long the sheriff has come by to have a cup of coffee and piece of pie standing up at the counter; his brother, a mid-sized gray wolf named Smokey, wanders over to politely greet the strange wolves and see whether they're aiming to make any trouble. Bo and Frost amiably make the acquaintance of this local pack-leader, and a few minutes later the sheriff realizes he recognizes Nate and Bo from televised Veterans' League Capture the Flag games--the DC-Area Recon Veterans have gone to the national championships three years running with Bo on the team. The sheriff gets an autograph and paw-print for his wolf-mad son, Stiles, and wishes the shieldmates a good night before he heads out.

Uh, there are no werewolves in the wolf-verse, is the thing. So the full moon is not a very big deal. :)

comments

Happy birthday to me! This is the last story of Every Marine a Wolfbrother, a coda and bookend to the very first story, Which in Your Case You Have Not Got.

Many thanks to templemarker and iuliamentis for beta and for encouraging this whole idea for the last two years.

And now, the <strike>oral sex!</strike> <strike>happy ending!</strike> rest of the story! One last minor dub-con warning in this part.

There is one last much-shorter story in the series, which should be going up in the next few days. :D

You Drive Through the Dust (117385 words) by Dira Sudis
Chapters: 5/5
Fandom: Generation Kill, Iskryne Series - Elizabeth Bear & Sarah Monette
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick, Nate Fick/Original Female Character, Brad Colbert/Ray Person, Nate Fick/Mike Wynn, Pappy Patrick/Rudy Reyes, John Christeson/Evan Stafford
Characters: Nate Fick, Brad Colbert, Ray Person, Mike Wynn, Craig Schwetje, Ray "Casey Kasem" Griego, Stephen Ferrando, Evan Wright, James Trombley
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Psychic Wolves, Non-Monogamy, Animal Death, Harm to Children, Dubious Consent, Minor Injuries, Pack Dynamics, Wolf Pack, Mating Cycles/In Heat, Mates, Iraq, Kuwait, Hunting, The Grooming Standard, The Old Ways, Bitches Get Shit Done, Pining
Series: Part 7 of Every Marine a Wolfbrother
Summary:

August 2002-August 2003.

Chapter 2! This chapter is about 28,000 words.

This chapter also is home to the very most dubious/unhappy dubious consent in the entire series, so please check the end notes and/or message me if that might be a problem for you.

You Drive Through the Dust (43337 words) by Dira Sudis
Chapters: 2/5
Fandom: Generation Kill, Iskryne Series - Elizabeth Bear & Sarah Monette
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick, Nate Fick/Original Female Character, Brad Colbert/Ray Person, Nate Fick/Mike Wynn, Pappy Patrick/Rudy Reyes, John Christeson/Evan Stafford
Characters: Nate Fick, Brad Colbert, Ray Person, Mike Wynn, Craig Schwetje, Ray "Casey Kasem" Griego, Stephen Ferrando
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Psychic Wolves, Non-Monogamy, Animal Death, Harm to Children, Dubious Consent, Minor Injuries, Pack Dynamics, Wolf Pack, Mating Cycles/In Heat, Mates, Iraq, Kuwait, Hunting, The Grooming Standard, The Old Ways, Bitches Get Shit Done, Pining
Series: Part 7 of Every Marine a Wolfbrother
Summary:
August 2002-August 2003.
Dear YAGKYAS writer!

Dear YAGKYAS writer,

Sorry I didn't get this up before assignments went out! Thank you in advance for writing me a story! Above all please write something that makes you happy, and I'll be happy too. But now on to the optional details. :D

I asked for Nate/Brad, which is definitely my favorite pairing in this fandom. I'd love to see something kind of goofy and light-hearted for them--just a relaxed moment, or an ordinary slice of life, or porn is of course always welcome. I'd also love weird trope fic--someone getting transformed into a cat or a kid or having post-surgical amnesia (or, ooh, any kind of amnesia) or getting sex-swapped on the sexy/wacky end of the seriousness spectrum, or being destined soulmates or any other weird and mostly-fun cliche/trope/etc.

I also asked for Nate/Mike, which I don't get to see as a pairing very often but is one of my favorite relationships in the whole show. I'd love to see any exploration of their relationship--the weirdly intertwined authority relationship and the way Mike is really the only person Nate can turn to in Iraq--if you can add sex onto that as well it would be awesome! But I would be happy with gen/friendship fic looking at that too. Feel free to just silently AU Mike's wife out of existence if you want to, but don't do anything horrible to her or focus the story on the fact of cheating.

I also requested Nate and Evan as single characters! Nate is my very very favorite, and I love his competence and his protectiveness of his men and his quiet, understated badassery and his hidden woobietude and his green green eyes and basically everything about him. And Evan! I love Evan so much--I'd rather not see fic that looks at him as the butt of jokes or focuses on his comparative helplessness. I love his perspective on the Marines, and his general eagerness to learn everything about everyone and the way that he seems genuinely willing to be impressed by them and just. &Evan;

So, any of that!

I also mentioned a Chalion Saga fusion as my wild card. If you haven't read Lois McMaster Bujold's Curse of Chalion, no worries, totally disregard this. But if you have--oh my God, NATE IS SUCH A DEDICAT OF THE DAUGHTER, AND BRAD OF THE SON (AND RAY IS TOTALLY THE BASTARD'S). RIGHT? RIGHT?! So, you know, do with that what you will. *g*

If you have any questions, or if I have been totally unhelpful or anti-helpful, feel free to check in with iulia (iuliamentis on twitter and tubmlr). She knows what I like better than I do and is scarily good at keeping secrets from me! :D

comments

Generation Kill wolf-verse Fic: You Drive Through the Dust, Chapter 1

oh god oh god oh god posting day has arrived. Ahem!

Many many thanks to my team of betas: templemarker, trinity_clare, riverlight, oliviacirce, thefourthvine, my assorted advance-readers and cheerleaders, and Iulia forever as always! And thanks also to anyone I forgot. It's been a long road, and I have had a lot of help along the way.

The ratings/pairings/tags cover the entire story. More detailed warnings for each chapter are in the end notes. Please let me know if I missed something that should be tagged/warned, and feel free to ask questions if there's a particular warning you're concerned about! I've had this story living in my head so long I've lost track of which parts might be upsetting. (I think that everything that happens in the story is canon-typical at worst, for one canon or the other, but that doesn't actually eliminate much.)

Title is from Dutch by Dessa:
But you can't play for keeps if you never draw blood
You just brace and you breathe, you drive through the dust

At one time I planned to write the entire arc from Nate and Bo and Brad and Frost meeting in Afghanistan through to Iraq as one story, and I intended to call the whole thing You Just Brace and You Breathe. When I realized I needed to break the story into two parts, I realized that the second half of the line was perfect for the Iraq part, so here it is.

(The working/alternate title/summary was "(Nate's got) 99 problems and a bitch is most of them.")

The story is in five parts, a loose attempt at five act structure (as described by Film Crit Hulk). I'll be posting one part per day until Friday, so if you don't like to read WIPs the whole story will be up by the weekend!

And without further ado:

You Drive Through the Dust (15260 words) by Dira Sudis
Chapters: 1/5
Fandom: Generation Kill, Iskryne Series - Elizabeth Bear & Sarah Monette
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick, Nate Fick/Original Female Character, Brad Colbert/Ray Person, Nate Fick/Mike Wynn, Pappy Patrick/Rudy Reyes, John Christeson/Evan Stafford
Characters: Nate Fick, Brad Colbert, Ray Person, Mike Wynn, Craig Schwetje, Ray "Casey Kasem" Griego, Stephen Ferrando
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Psychic Wolves, Non-Monogamy, Animal Death, Harm to Children, Dubious Consent, Minor Injuries, Pack Dynamics, Wolf Pack, Mating Cycles/In Heat, Mates, Iraq, Kuwait, Hunting, The Grooming Standard, The Old Ways, Bitches Get Shit Done
Series: Part 7 of Every Marine a Wolfbrother
Summary:
August 2002-August 2003.
Fair warning: GK Wolf-verse fic incoming!

In case anyone wants early warning on this--and because I am SO EXCITED YOU GUYS!!!--the big penultimate fic from my Every Marine a Wolfbrother series is alllllmost done. I need to do some last reviewing and polishing and nervous fidgeting, and then I'll start posting a week from today, Monday, October 14. It's in five parts, totaling, at the moment, about 117,000 words, so I'll be posting one part a day next week.

:D :D :D

...Also this is (part of) why I didn't post for three weeks after nearly making it through the 30 Days of Posting challenge. There's been a lot of editing going on around these parts, between that and an original novel I'm trying to whip into shape. I promise to post every day next week, though! :D

comments

Generation Kill wolf-verse Iraq story: 110,290 words
Scenes left: 5-ish. Like five actual specific scenes and then it will be done. o.O

!!!!!

I actually thought I might finish this tonight, but I am either dealing with really obnoxious medication side effects or a summer cold or maybe both, so I abruptly ran out of spoons around 7:30 PM and that was it for writing.

SO CLOSE, THOUGH. SO.
Take that, Wednesday. Take. That.

Generation Kill wolf-verse Iraq story: 100,117 words
Events left in Act V: 7.5
After that: THE GREAT UNKNOWN. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WRITING THIS STORY. WHO AM I WHEN I'M NOT WRITING THIS STORY?

...Oh wait after that I'm editing this story. OKAY GOT IT.

Odds of finishing this story within the next 15,000 words: very good, unless I get really carried away by bullet point #14. Which ... is a possibility. It's such a FUN bullet point. Like, actually fun, not watching-characters-suffer-and-laughing-my-maniacal-laugh fun. (Maybe a little bit of that kind of fun).

STILL, THOUGH. THIS STORY IS GOING TO END. SOOOOON.

comments

Generation Kill: Improvise, Adapt, Overcome (Nate/Brad, NC-17)

I found out about badsexfest when someone posted about it in a Generation Kill community, so when I scrolled through the prompts it was with an eye to the GK ones. I ran across Brad/Nate: PTSD, one of them can't get it up and immediately thought no no, too depressing.

So obviously the next morning I had worked out what I wanted to write for it. And I thought to myself, you know, I've already written some can't-get-it-up porn in Dance Across the Room, so if I'm going to write it in GK as well I should really go for the trifecta of my active fandom OTPs and write a Teen Wolf story, too, wasn't there a prompt for that...? Thanks to a random.org coin toss I wound up actually writing Pretty Much a Big Deal first, but in fact today's story is the one that convinced me I needed to complete the Erectile Dysfunction Trifecta, and now I have. :D

Improvise, Adapt, Overcome (4449 words) by Dira Sudis
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Generation Kill
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick
Characters: Nate Fick, Brad Colbert
Additional Tags: Erectile Dysfunction, Medication
Summary:
Written for badsexfest: PTSD, one of them can't get it up (because of trauma, meds, injury, etc.)

Brad's coming home, and Nate is a little worried about the welcome-back sex.

comments

10,000 words in 18 days: not bad, not bad.

Generation Kill wolf-verse Iraq story: 90,167 words
Events left in Act V: Nine. ish.
Acts after this one: NONE. THIS IS IT. THIS IS MY CLOSING ARGUMENT. I CAN STOP WATCHING TV.

Odds of finishing this story in the next 15,000 words: uh. I wouldn't put money on it.

comments

Gaining speed!

Generation Kill wolf-verse Iraq story: 80,056 words
Scenes to go in Act IV: TWO.
Acts after this one: ONE.
Things left to happen from the miniseries: ZERO.

...Which means I'm back to writing One Bullet Away fic, but the point is WE ARE GETTING PRETTY CLOSE TO THE END NOW AND THE STORY IS STILL APPROXIMATELY ON TARGET FOR THE LENGTH I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. :D

comments
