Okay, well, everyone has been adding their own questions to the meme, so… why not one more? (It occurs to me that if everyone adds a question, we’re going to get a sort of “house that Jack built” effect in which the meme becomes unreasonably long, and also that it would become possible to trace the path of the meme by noting which questions were included in each person’s rendition.) Anyway! It struck me that none of the questions so far have asked specifically about teachers. I’m sure no one will be surprised that I have thoughts on this topic. It’s hard to pin down exactly what I want to ask here—basically the idea is something along the lines of “you had good teachers,” but, first of all, nearly everyone will have had many different teachers of varying quality, and secondly, I think there are at least three different axes along which teachers can be evaluated. Axis 1 would be the extent to which the teacher inspired/encouraged/connected with individual students; Axis 2 is knowledge of the subject matter; Axis 3 is knowledge of how to teach the subject matter (which is distinct from the subject itself!). I could go on about this for much longer, but Daylight Savings Time has stolen an hour from me and I need to finish this post in some finite time. I’ll just say I was very lucky to have some excellent teachers along all these axes at every stage of my education. Even during my very difficult 7th grade year, there were several good teachers that I remember fondly. And while there were other teachers who were just okay, or mildly annoying in some cases, I wouldn’t say there were any who had a significant negative impact on me.

As an example of someone who was less lucky in this way: a student who was in my class years ago told me about his experience in middle school math. He said he had done well in math in elementary school, but then somehow ended up in a “remedial” math class in middle school. The teacher would apparently stand there in class every day and tell the students they were stupid and couldn’t learn anything. So for years this student had thought of himself as someone who couldn’t do math. Somehow he made it past that: he got through the math prerequisites to take the most advanced physics classes we offer, and won an award for being a top physics student. But I wonder how many other students from that middle school class just completely gave up on math forever.

Okay, I’m going to post this now before it becomes any longer. It’s been very interesting for me to think through all these questions and write this up!

The Jewish War: Second half of Book 2

Last week: Lots of discussion of various contemporary Roman emperors and their families: Claudius, Agrippina, Nero, Britannicus. Quinctilius Varus and Arminius make an appearance as well. Also Josephus wants to tell you ALL about the Essenes, and none of us knows why but maybe we will find out sometime in the future?? (ugh, I haven't finished replying to comments yet on this either, sorry! -- hopefully will get to that tomorrow)

This week: The Jewish war starts! It's a mess. We do finally meet our hero Josephus, who is just the most heroic, clever, and brave guy. (Probably devilishly handsome too, although this is admittedly not in the text.)

For various reasons not limited to the overhead activity of children in the mornings, last night was the first real time all week that I slept and have thus spent most of the day in a vague state of hibernation despite the warmth of the air. There was a mauve overcast around sunset that turned out to belong to a volcanic wall of gold and bougainvillea over an agate-blue cloud-band. Have some mostly musical links.

For the more than twenty years since

lesser_celery made me a CD of Peter Gabriel's Melt (1980), I have assumed that the eerily voiced French refrain of "Games Without Frontiers" was either the singer's own falsetto or pitch-shifted vocals. It turns out to be Kate Bush. I would never have identified her on my own, but then I thought about "Army Dreamers" (1980).

I grew up on Arlo Guthrie, but my favorite version of "City of New Orleans" (1971) is almost certainly Steve Goodman himself in 1970, where he reminded me unexpectedly of a Chicago-accented Stan Rogers. It's driving me nuts that I would swear the first person I heard lead "The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over" (1977) was Pete Seeger and I can't figure out where.

WERS has been playing nothing but female artists for International Women's Day, which means everything from Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" (1978), Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine" (1983), and Bikini Kill's "Rebel Girl" (1993) to Tegan and Sara's "I'll Be Back Someday" (2019), Orla Gartland's "Little Chaos" (2024), and Arlo Parks' "2SIDED" (2026). I had a moral obligation to let my father know when Rickie Lee Jones came around.

Dear Writer of Unsent Letters

Dear Unsent Letters creator,

Hello, and thank you for writing for me!

First off, let me assure you that my tastes are really broad. I like everything from heart-warming fluff to full-bore tragedy, and the whole spectrum in between. I also tend to be very character-focused, so while plot is fine, I do regard it as entirely optional and I can be 100% happy with, say, fic that's nothing but two characters talking (or in this case writing, texting, etc.) to each other, or to themselves. Any rating is fine, but when it comes to sex scenes, I prefer them to feel like they're strongly based in the characters, rather than the characters mostly just being there as a vehicle for the porn, if that makes sense. Honestly, I care less about precisely what they're be doing in bed than about whether they feel like themselves while they're doing it.

Ugh, daylight savings, why are we still doing this???

Anyway, I got up at my usual workday time instead of sleeping in so I could get the onions in the slow cooker, and I did both the "soak onions in cold water in the fridge for 15 minutes" and wore the stupid onion goggles, and still by the 4th onion my eyes were extremely unhappy with me. *hands* Thankfully I only had 6 onions total, so it all got done, and for dinner I made French onion pasta as planned, and now I have dinner for 3 more days as well. I do love this pasta dish - and I always use bucatini, which is one of my favorite pasta shapes, so it was pleasing all around. Every time I make it after not having made in a while, I'm like, why don't I make this more often!? and then I remember the onion-slicing and how annoying it is. Anyway, definitely recommended for a delicious and easy dinner (except for the onion-slicing). I also made bacon so I have lunch for the week also.

I meant to mention this yesterday and forgot, but The Mountain Goats collaborated with Mary Chapin Carpenter to cover World Party: Put the Message in the Box (don't worry if you only recognize one or two of those names - the song is good!).

More Xena VHS stuff

I think all of these were created around 2001 (possibly earlier) - the earliest references I can find for some them are around May 1st 2001, August 4th 2001, and November 22nd, 2001.

(based on some of the footage included, I think #10 and #13 were made sometime between May 7th 2001 and August 4th 2001 and #6 and #12 were made somewhere between June 18th 2001 and August 4th 2001)

imho the horizontal lines are less noticeable in the digitized version then they were on my TV when I was playing the VHS. There is some flashing (usually pink) between some vids. Also heads up that vid #4 is kinda NSFW because of the fanart included.

PSA: solution for a known issue in Skyward Sword (Lanayru Desert) on Switch & Switch 2

I'm playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (HD) on Switch 2, docked, with a Pro Controller. Last night, I ran into an "I must be doing this wrong" frustration that turned out to be a known glitch, apparently affecting most folks playing without the motion controls for which the game was originally designed on the Wii. The most accessible advice on the internet is to "just" switch over to joy cons, turn on motion controls, calibrate, complete the puzzle, switch back to the pro controller, and switch back to button controls. ;-) Happily, I found an alternative tip -- to "flick" the right stick in a certain way -- and it worked!

I'd like to share, in case this helps anyone else: ( Spoilers for which puzzle has this issue, the glitch, and how to proceed without motion controls )

The possibility that I'm doing something wrong in a game is always first and foremost. :-) In this case, though, it's an actual known imperfection in an otherwise very impressive port.

Tallying.

Knowing my parents' summer plans, I don't think I'll want to attend the full vacation with them. I don't know yet if I'll want to attend any of it with them. They're staying in a town a half-hour's drive from Beacon, which is a pleasant enough train ride, so I'm thinking maybe three days, tops, would be okay.

Last time they did this, I only stayed a handful of days. It's not unprecedented in our vacation plans. I'll probably want to get out of New York City in its sticky season, and knowing I'll have a limited amount of time there from the get-go is probably one of the better things I can do to be able to enjoy myself. I've seen what happens when it's all on my parents. It doesn't end well.
