So my hot water doesn't work. It didn't work this morning when I woke up, so hygiene was a tad, um, cursory. And it still wasn't on when I got home from work today, and I just couldn't cope with the idea of a cold shower before I'd, y'know, eaten, and then whoops two hours had gone by and the apartment complex office is closed and I suspect that no hot water - even if it's cold and I'm dirty - doesn't quite constitute a maintenance emergency. I couldn't decide what to do, so I decided to go see what I could see. The hot water heaters for the building are right next to my apartment, in a room off the communal laundry room, behind a door with a deadbolt lock on it. The door was shut and I figured, okay, well, whatever.
Except the door wasn't locked. So I stepped inside - the lights were on - and peered at the water heaters. There are three of them, all different models, but the main thing I noticed was that the one nearest the door is unplugged. And if it were to be plugged back in, it would be to a 99-cent outlet splitter, one end of which is occupied by the plug for the middle water heater. Hmmm, I thought to myself. Now what?
