what my fandom has done for me lately

This morning on the train on the way to work, the coolest thing happened to me. I mean, I think it was pretty much the musical equivalent of managing to sound out all the words in The Cat in the Hat for the first time, but on the other hand I'd made it nearly to twenty-six years of age without being able to do the musical equivalent of reading The Cat in the Hat by myself, and this morning I finally did. So.

So, yeah, I was listening to Surf Wax America (the Weezer song that Ryland, Vicky T, and Gabe are singing the end of in this FOE clip from the Honda Civic Tour), which I have become a tiny bit obsessed with since identifying it as the song from the HCT clip. And I was foot-tapping the beat, like I compulsively do, because I am fidgety, and then - no doubt influenced by [livejournal.com profile] riverlight and [livejournal.com profile] omphale23's recent efforts to instill some music appreciation in ignorant bandomers like myself - I started not just tapping the beats but counting them. In fours. And all of a sudden I was hearing the music in measures. Measures! For the first time ever - and I spent a year and a half in band in middle school - measures suddenly meant something other than notation! Right there in my ears! Even when the tempo changed! And no one had to tell me how to hear it, I did it all by myself! It was fantastic and incredible and then I had to listen to "Calm Before the Storm" just to pick out the timing change in the bridge that Riverlight wrote about in her post.

So, you know--from Due South, a disturbingly thorough knowledge of Canadian immigration procedures; from Numb3rs a handful of mathematical parlor tricks and more information than anyone wants on how to become an FBI agent; from bandom, the (still-developing) ability to hear music properly. ♥ ♥ ♥
