Got up bright and early this morning, arrived at the Verizon store fifteen minutes after it opened. Explained my sad plight to the manager, bought new phone for an alarming multiple of what it cost the first time. I mentioned to the manager that, ha ha, as soon as I bought the new phone I was bound to find the old one, ha ha, I think you see where this is going, yeah? Yeah. He assured me that I could return the new one within thirty days for a seventy percent refund which, hey, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, at that price.
Went grocery shopping, worrying mildly about buying extravagances like lunch meat and produce when I just blew an alarming amount of money on a phone I wouldn't have needed if I'd just not lost it.
Went out to my car to load in groceries. Opened passenger door. Looked down.
Beheld my damn phone. Turned on, ringer set to medium, 22 missed calls (thank you, everybody who tried calling it).
Loaded up groceries, drove back to Verizon store while mentally calculating how much my hour with replacement phone was going to cost me.
But, since the manager was nice and also, seriously, it had been less than an hour, I got a full refund. So mostly it just cost me, you know. Dignity.
