Let me just get this straight.
In further adventures of things I honestly have no intention of writing:
It occurred to me this morning that there ought to be, somewhere in fandom, a French Kiss AU (shut up I love that movie).
First I tried it with White Collar, like maybe El is Meg Ryan and obviously Neal is Kevin Kline and Peter is ... Jean Reno? And they all end up together? Hm.
OR, Peter is Meg Ryan and El is Timothy Hutton and the falling in love with a French supermodel part is a wacky misunderstanding of some sort, and they all end up together. That might actually work pretty well.
Anyway, but then I got stuck trying to figure out if that means Neal is French--and, in the Peter-is-Jean-Reno version, is Peter French? Is Peter working for Interpol? Complicated.
And I thought to myself, surely there is another fandom I could smash this concept into and then I thought, OH! YES!
BONES IS MEG RYAN AND JIM IS KEVIN KLINE!
Which inevitably means that SPOCK IS JEAN RENO, JIM'S COP FRIEND WHO SEARCHES HIS THINGS JUST TO KEEP HIM OUT OF TROUBLE. IT'S ONLY LOGICAL.
I would hate to pigeonhole Uhura as Mme. Jean Reno, who barely has a line in the movie, if she does at all, so clearly Uhura is the Planet France goddess who Jocelyn falls in love with and is going to leave Bones for, motivating him to get on a goddamn SPACESHIP WHICH COULD KILL HIM to get to Planet France and win her back. Unless that's Gaila? Hmm, given the later dynamic with Jim that should probably be Gaila. I guess Uhura could be the Planet France hotelier who won't tell Bones where to find Jocelyn. Or we could just make her Spock's cop-partner, that might be the best. Logically Jim's brother should be a role filled by Jim's brother, so the remaining spots to slot Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov into are limited to, like, embassy officials and the thief who takes Bones' stuff. I can't decide whether that would be funnier with Chekov or with Scotty.
If Pike exists, he must be a family friend who's been patiently encouraging Jim's slightly embarrassing dream of giving up his glamorous life of interplanetary thievery in order to buy a run-down vineyard and make something of it (just like Jim's father did, of course--but better).
The only thing I'm sure of is that you cannot cross the Timothy Huttons: it doesn't work with Leverage at all. (Well, maybe it would sort of work as a trio-only AU with Hardison as Meg Ryan and Parker as Kevin Kline and Eliot as Jean Reno, but--no. No. I'm gonna stop now.)
