What, exactly, is the canon about John Sheppard's black mark? I know that the existence of a black mark on his record is referred to in the pilot, and the fact that he earned it by disobeying orders in a rescue attempt. Do we know who, if anyone, he succeeded in saving? Or how long ago this had happened? Pointers to the actual dialogue on which this stuff is based are extra-super-appreciated.

...Oh God I've just realized I have more than one thing I want to write for which I need this information. Did I somehow just pimp myself into SGA in 2011? IDEK.

it was Afghanistan, I remember they did mention it in episodes (including him hallucinating being there in one) and he went back for friends. I think it crops up the first real time in "Home" in S1, but there's a later episode where the actual hallucinating occurs. I don't remember if he successfully rescued anyone, but I think some of them definitely died.

I think the episode you're thinking of with the Afghanistan hallucinations was 3.09 "Phantoms". I can't remember specifics about the dialogue in it, though.

I think--having just read some transcripts--that the dead friends from "Home" are actually distinct from the dead friend who he tried to save and got punished for. Mitch and Dex, in "Home," and Holland in "Phantoms."
