Look, okay, I am a big Rory fan, and that means that every time it's really Rory I cheer, but God damn it, could we stop now with the fakeouts where Amy sounds like she's talking about the Doctor but no really she means Rory? Because it wouldn't work if there were any other moment in the series where it seems like she thinks Rory is actually that awesome or important (SHE STOPPED DOING CPR AFTER LIKE A MINUTE AND JUST SAT THERE AND CRIED WHILE RORY INDEPENDENTLY WILLED HIMSELF BACK TO LIFE, AND OY, SPACEMAN, YOUR SONIC DOESN'T HAVE A DEFIBRILLATE SETTING? SERIOUSLY? SO I GUESS IT'S BEEN LIKE A MONTH AND IT WAS A TERRIBLE EPISODE AND I AM JUST NEVER GETTING OVER IT) and, just. Could we be done with that now? Please? Because it's getting increasingly insulting to the characters and the audience every time.

I particularly hated this time, because it was like they were tying themselves in knots to be deliberately misleading. "Your father is old but looks young..." (dum dum dum) "he's the LAST CENTURION." Did they make Rory run around in his Roman outfit for an entire episode just to try and sell that pathetic line?

Dear writers: please stop it.

Yeah, see, that might have worked if Amy ever showed any interest in Rory's two-thousand-year-history, or if Rory ever made reference to it or was evidently changed by it--if in the pirate episode he'd known something about sword-fighting, for instance! OH LOOK, NOW THAT EPISODE MAKES ME EVEN ANGRIER THAN IT ALREADY DID--or. Anything. But no.

I just. I took a CPR class for work this year, and--I'm not going to critique Amy's form, or even the fact that CPR alone doesn't actually save people almost ever, it just keeps them going until you get them some medical care OH HEY GOOD THING YOUR AMBULANCE IS A TIME MACHINE AND YOU CAN INSTANTLY TRANSPORT THE PATIENT TO ANY HOSPITAL OF YOUR CHOOSING ANYWHERE AND ANYWHEN IN THE UNIVERSE--I'm just saying that the most important instruction we received was you don't stop until help arrives or you physically cannot do compressions anymore. I'm just saying Rory would have kept doing compressions for hours. Until his arms fell off. Until he lost consciousness. And Amy, who he trusted and believed in, who swore she would never give up, lasted a minute.

And there would have been an epic montage of Rory working tirelessly to preserve Amy's life because he is her everlasting unstoppable centurion. Presumably while the Doctor plays Solitaire in the background.

And then after Rory has collapsed in tragic agony the Doctor points his screwdriver and melts her without looking.

Although Rory stopped doing his broken-record "I'm a nurse!" thing, which was refreshing. (only to give the line to random!Sontaran, but at least they're *trying*...?)

I was actually actively confused by that, because--Rory is a nurse who became a warrior, the Sontaran was a warrior who became a nurse, and they could have actually connected if Rory had said something, but he just ... didn't.

I can't really disagree. I loved Rory's heroic entrance this week, but the set-up was kind of ridiculous. I am totally done with the love triangle nonsense anyway.

Couldn't he have just ... had a heroic entrance with no fakeout? Oh wait, only if we remembered all the time that he's heroic. Right.

You'd think that the man who gave us Captain Jack Harkness could manage a heroic male lead without somehow diminishing the Doctor. We all want Rory to stay sweet and human, but that doesn't mean he isn't consistently awesome. It's just that the show keeps insisting that he isn't! I dunno, I don't get it.

Last weekend I listened to some very knowledgeable-sounding people making the point that Rory (and his relationship with Amy) are kind of a type that shows up again and again in Moff's writing--a long-suffering and likeable but generally ineffectual guy who may or may not be the author's self-insert. The fact that all efforts to make Rory badass never quite stick then makes a kind of sense, I suppose....

Yeeeeeeah. I think I was just so relieved that it actually was a fakeout and they weren't suddenly MAKING IT THE DOCTOR'S INEXPLICABLE BABY that it didn't bother me as much, but you're completely right. I also kind of desperately want Rory's two-thousand-year stint as the last centurion to actually BE REALLY IMPORTANT, instead of just fuel for throw-away lines and outfits, so I stay hopeful, but without a lot of grounding in what they are actually saying and doing on the show.

And, oh my god, I just realized after posting this that HELLO HE SHOULD HAVE SPENT THE WHOLE PIRATE EPISODE KNOWING WHAT TO DO WITH SWORDS, but, no, Amy has to rescue him. Of course. Because what does Rory know about fighting. GRRRRR.
