Two things, vaguely related
1) I've written about 8,000 words on the babyfic since I lasted posted a word count, and as of now the word count has risen from 40,046 to 40,406. There was a whole bunch of miserable rewriting and various flavors of deleting leading up to last night's redaction of an entire plot event which was making things unnecessarily difficult. I feel like I just moved all the way from Why is this happening to me?* to OH! WRITING IS FUN!
2) If you spend enough time searching the internet for military hand signals, you will wind up at this video, which, according to the YouTube comments, actually gets shown to actual members of the military when they are getting trained on hand signals.
You're welcome.
*Somebody with more brain to spare than I currently have could probably turn that into a Scale of Writing/Creating Pain. I will leave it as an exercise to the reader.

And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that had made it into more than one official hand-and-arm signal powerpoint presentation.
(That said, the military-wide "canon" for hand-and-arm signals is incredibly small. Each country, service, and all the way down to unit can have different uses for any given hand-and-arm signal. For an extreme example, the difference between Navy aircraft carrier deck crews and Marine infantry. Some of the gestures are the same, but wildly different meanings.)

(Yeah, I wound up concluding that it was best not to include specific hand signals in the story because I was bound to get something wrong and/or be forced to spend way too much time describing the precise mechanics of the hand signal in question. *g*)
