Yuletide in retrospect
Picked up from everybody, and vastly preferable to anything useful I'm meant to be doing right now.
2003 (Two stories for my original recipient, because reasons.)
Pueri Solivagi - Dead Poets Society, Charlie/Todd.
In the days when Yuletide was new! I don't think Dear Yuletider letters were much of a thing yet, so my detective-work to figure out what my recipient wanted involved going and reading her fic in DPS, and this was inspired by one of them nearly to the point of being a sequel.
Another Day - Reign of Fire, Quinn/Creedy.
...And then I finished the first story really early and it was quite short and didn't have porn, so I wrote this, too, and turned it in about an hour before the deadline with frantic live beta and everything.
2004 (Original recipient + pinch hit)
Two Heroes - L. A. Confidential, Bud/Lynn & Bud/Exley.
Oh my God, I was so terrified of writing this story, because at that point
astolat had just written some scorching-hot LA Confidential porn which was basically the only thing out there fic-wise. To this day I remember the relief of deciding to fade to black in this story.
Hunde - Spy Game, Muir/Bishop.
Pinch hit! I remember where I was when I figured out what to write for this, and it was a blast. And I still don't know why everyone in fandom hasn't seen and written porn about this movie. YOU GUYS. SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS.
2005
Sympathy for the Devil - Dead Zone, Bruce/Johnny.
Bruce/Johnny wasn't really my ship in DZ, so this one was kind of an adventure, but I am terribly fond of it. Also, almost titled "In the Bleak Midwinter" but it turned out there was already a DZ story with that title.
2006 (Original recipient + pinch hit)
Anna and Everything After - Anna to the Infinite Power, Eve Hart & Rowan Hart.
So, funny story, in 2006 I got re-matched to my same recipient from the previous year, who wanted another Dead Zone Johnny/Bruce story. I couldn't figure out what to write, so I bought a copy of Mildred Ames's Anna to the Infinite Power, read it, and wrote this, leaving me very confused when someone complimented my take on the ending of the movie.
The Beautiful Lull - Reign of Fire, Quinn/Creedy.
I love this movie a lot, you guys. And they are super married.
2007 (No Yuletide, only bandom. It was really weird, I couldn't think of anything I wanted to request that year because ALL I WANTED WAS GERARD WAY AND BOB BRYAR FOR CHRISTMAS.)
2008
Now 'Tis Buried Deep - Julian Kestrel, gen.
This was one of my more terrifying Yuletide experiences--I try hard to get voice right, and the Julian Kestrel books are Regency-era English detective mysteries. Somewhere I have an entire page of notes on words Dipper, the Cockney valet, uses, although he wound up not appearing at all.
2009
The Season of Grace - Oxford Time Travel, Kivrin Engle.
This was probably my favorite turnaround from terror to GLEE at an assignment. I read Doomsday Book at an impressionable age (it is possible that this explains some things about my standards for angst in my own writing), so getting the chance to write a happier ending than Kivrin got on the page was huge to me.
2010 (Original recipient + two treats)
Not Alone in the Dark - Under Jurisdiction, Andrej, Joslire, Robert.
This was so awesome--I both wrote and received this fandom that year, and at that point as far as I know those were the only two pieces of fic on the entire internet for this fandom. The first three books of this series are massive slash-bait. I ended up asking people stuff like "If the orgy is off-screen and only really involved one of the POV characters the story is still gen, right?"
Sex on a Frozen River Mayhem - Mayhem Allstate Commercials/Torchwood.
The summary of this story - "Mayhem, meet Captain Jack Harkness" - was in the recipient's Yuletide letter. I wasn't quick enough to pick up her pinch hit, but I saw that and couldn't resist writing this, giggling the whole time.
The Most Important Meal - Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Joe/Guinevere.
I had just seen this movie for the first time that year, and adored it, and was feeling cheerfully fannish about it with no particular outlet, and then along came a pinch-hit, and I got to write this. ♥
2011 (Original recipient + treat)
Not the Last Unknown - Oxford Time Travel, Kivrin Engle & Colin Temple.
This was the story about Colin that I had been wanting to write since I read All Clear. I tried to come up with something somewhat more, um, upbeat, but this was the story that won out, and I remain fond of it.
Waking - Fairy Tales (Sleeping Beauty), original female character gen.
This was a story that I had actually already written, and loved, but didn't quite know what to do with until I figured out that I could give it to someone as a gift for Yuletide.
