AO3 hits meme

It's that time of year again, when I resurrect this meme for annual-comparison purposes. Last year and the year before I posted about my top ten stories on the AO3 by hits and here's this year's list:

1. Break the Lock If It Don't Fit (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, NC-17, domestic violence). 13,000 words, posted September 2012. 37,750 hits. The first NC-17 Derek/Stiles I wrote. Teen Wolf fandom, man. o.O

2. Being Found (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, NC-17, cuddly). 6,000 words, posted November 2012. 21,889 hits. Also Derek/Stiles, also NC-17, perhaps you see a pattern developing.

3. The Boy and the Beast (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, NC-17, animal transformation, curses, canonical character death). 117,000 words, posted last week. 20,399 hits. Given that this one is less than a week old and already at #3, I would guess it's going places. Plus, it's Derek/Stiles and there are sexy parts.

4. All You Need to Know (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, truth serum). 3,000 words, posted September 2012. 16,934 hits. Not NC-17, but still Derek/Stiles!

5. Don't You Shake Alone (Generation Kill, Nate/Brad, NC-17, PTSD babyfic). 62,000 words, posted July 2012. 12,704 hits. GK fandom represent! My highest-hit story outside of Teen Wolf fandom, still only nine months old.

6. Comforter (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, hurt/comfort). 800 words, posted August 2012. 9,555 hits. My very first foray into Derek/Stiles.

7. Dream a Little Bigger (Darling) (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, candy). 1,700 words, posted October 2012. 9,232 hits. Valentine's Day story in October? Fine if it's Derek/Stiles!

8. Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive (Torchwood/Doctor Who, Jack/Ianto, NC-17, less than 19% mpreg by volume). 68,000 words, posted to AO3 December 2009. 8,433 hits. This is my highest-hit story not first posted to the AO3 in the last year--it was #3 last year, which means that although knocked way down the list by this year's fic, it still moved up relative to the other stories on last year's list.

9. A Little Mental Yoga (Southland, John/Ben, NC-17, telepathy). 17,000 words, posted January 2010. 7,253 hits. This was #1 last year.

10. Responsible Use of Magic (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, NC-17, magical bondage). 3,000 words, posted November 2012. 7,173 hits. Derek/Stiles! NC-17!

So my top ten is 70% Teen Wolf, and eight stories from last year were knocked out by stories from this year; I would blame this entirely on Teen Wolf, but last year I had six stories knocked out by new ones, so it's not actually totally unprecedented.

Still, though. Writing a juggernaut pairing in a juggernaut fandom: o.O

Re: #5 & #8, I feel I should apologise for skewing the statistics - approximately 10k of those hits are probably me returning again and again.

I hear you on the boggling at hit counts.

For me, it's the juggernaut fandom. I came in late to both HP and SG:A, so now, with Avengers, I see the hits crawl up and have to remind myself that it's the fandom, it's not me.

Your smaller fandoms are working hard to drive up those hit counts... same thirty fans, visiting one week at a time.

Sadly, I think you're doing much better on converting your smaller-fandom audience to the more popular media than the reverse. (Confidential to Teen Wolf people: get over here and read some GK!)

Ooh, very interesting! I've definitely discovered that juggernaut pairing in a juggernaut fandom effect, too, yeah, yikes.

:) Aside from the GenKill and Southland fics, the links for me are all showing up darker for having been visited. You've been some of my favorite reading material this past year!
