2017 Fic Year in Review

...on January 7 because that is how things are going this week/month/year/etc.

Scope note: I am including the WIPs I've posted to AO3 this year, and will also include them in future Years in Review for years in which new chapters are posted.

In 2017 I posted 16 complete stories (including completion of one WIP begun in 2016), added chapters to one existing WIP and put it on hiatus, and began posting of one new WIP, for a total of almost 243,000 words of fic posted in ... just two fandoms, the fewest in any complete year of fic-posting since I started writing and posting fic. 18 stories is also tied for fewest stories in a year. 2017, man.

This year's titles quoted from The Mountain Goats (3), Vienna Teng, Jet, Alan Jackson, The Avengers, T. S. Eliot, Dan Fogelberg, Dashboard Confessional, and Elsie Carlisle.

Five Times Jack and Bitty Slept Together Before They Slept Together (Plus One Time After) (Bitty/Jack, what it says on the tin, Teen, 8,616 words)

Love Excels (Bitty/Jack, domestic fluff, T, 1,685 words)

My best story this year: probably "Treasured" or "Ring the Bell Backward." Or "The Sacrifice Play"? Um. Hm.

My favorite story this year: "Two Young, Savage Things" or "Five Times Jack and Bitty Slept Together..."

My most popular story this year: "Treasured" got the most kudos, while (mainly due to WIP structure, I think) "There Is No Shortage of Blood" won on hits and comments. Best hits-to-kudos ratio was "Love Excels," which got a kudo for ever 4.43 hits.

Most fun story to write: "Many Hands Make Light Work," probably, sailing into a kinkmeme in a fandom I'd never written for to write something deeply weird. :D

Story with the single sexiest moment: "Come on and Get Your Kicks"

Story with the single sweetest moment: "Born in the Blood," all that wedding-dancing/baby-cuddling.

Story with the single saddest moment: "Ring the Bell Backward"

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: ...Probably the cannibalism, right? "Things We'd Held in Secret"

My weirdest/kinkiest story as demonstrated by reader response: (I made an entire spreadsheet with six different columns of formulas just to be able to quantify this, you guys.) "It's Alright (To Be Little Bitty)" won highest percentage of bookmarks kept private on AO3 (41%), and "Sleepy" won for the widest disparity between rate of kudos (9.17 hits per kudo, a bit better than my average in MCU stories) and rate of comments (257 hits per comment, right about 2.5 times average for my MCU stories), and was runner up on private bookmarks at 36%. (Weirdly, "A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar," in which there is no kink but Jack Zimmmermann has a really ugly back tattoo, has almost exactly the same response profile as "Sleepy," a PWP focusing on a relatively rare kink.)

Hardest story to write: Well, I eventually gave up on writing "Born in the Blood" for the foreseeable future, so. Probably that one? Although things have been more difficult than normal overall this year, so it's hard to tell.

Biggest surprise: I really did not mean to get into Check Please! fandom?? And I especially really did not anticipate getting into Check Please! fandom by writing weirdly chaste a/b/o gangbang that doesn't even have my OTP getting naked together.

This year’s theme and the story that demonstrates it most: I wrote a lot of stories about my faves being sheltered, protected, and cared for this year--by their partners, by friends, by strangers. "There Is No Shortage of Blood" is probably the apex of that, in a weird way.

Favorite opening line: Steve caught up with him for the last time at the Grand Canyon. from "There Is No Shortage of Blood" which I have been seeing every time I opened the story file since 2014 and still rather love?

Favorite closing line: From "Ring the Bell Backward": "I told you," Bucky said, grinning. Steve was here, safe and sound, and Bucky had so much to show him, so much to tell. "We came to the future."

What fests/exchanges/etc. did you participate in this year? I contributed a story to a printed zine/anthology for the first time ("Ring the Bell Backward" for Not Without You), participated in the SamSteve Gift Exchange ("Holding Fast," written for hakubo), wrote a pinch hit for Smut Swap ("Come on and Get Your Kicks" for SilverShepard), posted one auction story ("Things We'd Held in Secret" for fluffydeath in the Fandom Trumps Hate fundraiser), participated in the Captain America Reverse Big Bang ("Treasured" for sealcat's art), filled a kinkmeme prompt ("Many Hands Make Light Work"), wrote three Kinktober stories ("Sleepy," "Support Your Back," and "Come Along There Soldier (Put Away Your Gun)") and took part in the Swawesome Santa exchange ("Love Excels," written for nevermindedanyway).

...I think I posted all of 3 or 4 stories that weren't continuations of series or responding to prompts, in all of 2017. And one of those I started writing in 2014. So... that's... a thing.

My weirdest/kinkiest story as demonstrated by reader response:

*hangs head*

I think it says everything you need to know about me that I meerkat'd toward this category:D

I love that you listed where your titles came from. That's a neat bit of data to look back on.

And I am so fond of your "biggest surprise."
