Okay, Mr. Logic...

I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl about the way Fraser tends to overanalyze and overthink things. We agreed that Fraser does this in canon and not just my fic (it just, er, takes up more screentime in my fic. shut up.) - as when he thought Thatcher wanted him to father her child. Once he'd gotten that idea, he just went along thinking it out in his own mind and never picking up further clues that might contradict his first assumption.

Fraser doesn't have problems with logic vs. instinct. After all, right there in the pilot, he acts on a hunch. Fraser has problems with logic versus reality. At some point he chooses a set of axioms, and starts proceeding - logically - from those axioms, without really fact-checking with the outside world. Unless and until the outside world starts beating him with two-by-fours, and sometimes not even then.

This lead me to the realization of what precisely Fraser's laws-of-physics-and-probability-bending superpower is: he lives In Theory. As in, "Well, Ray, In Theory it should be possible for us, if we land on precisely the right snow structures from precisely the right angle and position, to land unharmed after jumping out of a plane." And then they do!
