So. After spending a lot of time cleaning and waiting around for the repair guy and cleaning some more and waiting around some more, I still have water dripping from my bathroom ceiling. OTOH, I finally felt free to actually go run some errands, which included going to Borders and buying. um. Horatio Hornblower: The Complete Adventures on DVD. And then I came home and ordered the last two, which are not included in the Complete Adventures because, I don't know. They're Extra-Complete or something. So. Yes. I maybe have a little bit of a thing for Horatio. And Archie. And Bush. OMG BUSH.

And to allay [livejournal.com profile] qe2's cognitive dissonance, I mean Lt. William Bush as played by Paul McGann, and not that other one we hear so much about in this country.

So. Yes. Ahem.

1. His first sensation was of vague discomfort, a damp chilliness which almost immediately exploded into wet cold so piercing it seemed his heart would freeze and shatter; next he was aware of cold rain beating on his head, melting away his hair and scalp . . . - Bone by George C. Chesbro, unguessed, and oddly not the one I thought least likely to be guessed - it's a standalone mystery with amnesia! and people living in the tunnels under New York! and a fossilized human femur! what more could anybody want from a book, really? I mean, I suppose they could want it to be in print, or something like that, but, pfft.

2. Many years later she remembered how her parents had looked to her when she was a small child: her father as tall as a tree, and merry and bright and golden, with her beautiful black-haired mother at his side. Deerskin by Robin McKinley - [livejournal.com profile] helenish, inter alia.

3. The shouts sounded like murmurs to her numbed ears, murmurs far away and having nothing to do with her. Dancer of the Sixth by Michelle Shirey Crean, unguessed to my total non-surprise. I don't think I've ever met more than one other person who'd read or even heard of this book; it was a Del Rey first! novel! or something and has been OOP more or less since it was released - but it's a love story and a science fiction story and the ending makes me feel incredibly warm and fuzzy.

4. Memories haunted the Ghostwood, brittle as the twigs that splintered like tiny bones under Mark's boots. Nobody's Son by Sean Stewart - [livejournal.com profile] brighidestone

5. It was predictable, in hindsight. The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell - [livejournal.com profile] kirixchi

6. "Yes," said Tom bluntly, on opening the front door. "What d'you want?" Good Night, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian - [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o
