Monday rectification effort starts now.

Moving on to something more productive than the topic of my last post: you guys, sometimes I am really, really, really slow to realize things.

Like, for example, I just realized in a burst of light on Saturday, May 1, in the year 2010, that Neville Longbottom is pretty much the archetype of everything that makes my favorite characters my favorite, and that is why I like reading good, long fic about him so much and think glumly that there is too little of it.

And then, also this weekend, also in the year 2010, I read Night-blooming Heartsease for the first time (I know! But I'm slow and also I used to be a lot more averse to deathfic, I guess.) and of course it was fantastically brilliant and I should have read it a long time ago but now I have read it and I'm not aware of any other Brilliant Neville Epics that I have been putting off reading so I'm at a bit of a loss.

I have read all the Lust Over Pendle stories twice, and I have read Helen's Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property at least three times, and that one - Strange Bedfellows? - where Draco is Neville's secretary also twice, so, um. If anybody wanted to rec me fic where Neville is awesome and quietly competent and gets the guy or girl or whomever, that would be fabulous.

I am tracking this post like a tracking, tracking thing, because I love Neville SO MUCH. Particularly with Draco, although I am willing to branch out. I was having a particularly bad week a couple of weeks ago and read Theft of Assets every. single. day.

*waits hopefully*

I love Neville SO MUCH. "What Would Neville Longbottom Do" has gotten me out of bed more mornings than not, I tell you.

Heartsease is one of my favorite fics ever. *_* You've read Transfigurations, too, right? There a few don't miss references in it to Neville and Snape from Heartsease. Oh man, that line of correspondence Harry finds in Snape's rooms gets me every single time. fghjfj

Speaking of Theft of Assets, there's a Draco/Neville fic that reminds me of it themewise. In this one, though, Draco and Neville aren't marrried; Draco takes on the role of indentured servant. The best part about it is how Neville handles it. Service of the Body by Wildestranger The hp-specific world building details are lovely, too.

Some gen:

The one where Harry observes Neville and doesn't keep his epiphanies to himself. (No really, it's not slashy. It's actually a rather creepy story.) Lightning Has Struck my Brain by Mousapelli

The Left Behind Series by Xylodemon is a What Happened in 7th Year at Hogwarts fic. Neville finds himself slowly fitting in. It's wip, but worth it for the lovely writing. Plus, world building!

Thanks for the recs, I have been devouring them all afternoon! I wish I had some of my own to share with you, but I'll be on the lookout!

I'm glad you're enjoying them! I bookmarked them quite a few years ago on del.ici.ous, which is where I do most of my fic-fishing. It's been quite a while since I've actively gone looking for Neville fic, though. Nostalgia. *eyes search function* If you do run across any new fics, recs would be appreciated and much loved. *_*

You're very welcome! Aha. Thanks to HP ending with book 7, it's one of those genres that will forever be 'newfangled' to me. I'm not sure how popular it is.

Oh! Come to think of it, there's another 7th Year at Hogwarts fic on ffnet called Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness, which I'm ambivalent about. On one hand, it's super long and Neville leads his classmates into fighting the Carrows and doing awesome deeds. On the other, his character development seemed a little forced. I prefer quiet!competent!Neville to surprise!Jolly!Epitome of Gryffindor!Neville.

Superfluous Soldiers
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2652090/1/Superfluous_Soldiers
"All of you sit down. Y-you came to hear what we had to say, so . . . you're going to hear it." Blinking a few time, Ginny looked up to find her tall, awkward friend standing in the middle of the circle looking for all the world like he'd really rather be facing a Snape shaped bogart at the moment. But still he stood there, his posture laced with a kind of steel that reinforced his words even as the nervousness in his voice undercut them.

"We've already heard what she had to say and it wasn't much," shouted a different heckler from the back of the room.

"Fine!" Neville snapped, "You want to go . . . go then, but you're wrong about one thing . . . this isn't just Harry's fight!"

Neville smiled at the dry words and headed to the set of shelves beside the desk and collected one of the bottles from the shelf. He unstopped it and turned to Severus, handing him the small bottle. Severus nodded his thanks before drinking down its contents.

"Do you want to come have dinner with us? Harry, Ron and Hermione are supposed to meet me for dinner at the Leaky Cauldron," Neville asked.

"I have too much work to do," Severus said.

"You always do," Neville said with a small sigh. "You spend too much time here with these essays; people are going to start to think that you don't like them."

"I don't."

There Are Days I Wish I Lived in a Romance Novel (But This Isn't One of Them)
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/hp_beholder/22236.html
(A romance of ordinary people)

"Close the--" The rest of the reproach choked in his throat as the large witch who was disturbing his peace elbowed the door shut with a pane-rattling bang. Her form and face were vaguely familiar (even he couldn't forget a figure that imposing), though it had been a few years since he saw her last, and he was mildly surprised that he no longer had to look up to meet her eyes. She was-- She was-- Merlin's trowel! Who was she?

Neville began pawing frantically through the haphazard stores of his memory. Slytherin, his year. She was early on in the alphabet, Bullock, Balustrade? Something like that. Anyway, they weren't schoolchildren anymore; he'd have to try to recollect her first name if he was going to attempt some semblance of cordiality. Martha? Matilda? She'd been in the Inquisitorial Squad, had intimidated Hermione more than she cared to admit. Minerva? No, that was McGonagall. Morgana? What was her name?

"Er, Mildred? I--"

"It's Millicent, Longbottom. Millicent Bulstrode."

And a self-promotion:

Rebuild What's Gone Unsteady
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4954517/1/Rebuild_Whats_Gone_Unsteady
(After the war, Neville helps Hogwarts rebuild)

"Why haven't you said anything?" he asked, quietly. Not even History had a name; he wondered what had happened to Professor Binns.

"People need Hogwarts to be strong. I did not think finding new staff would be so difficult." She sounded tired.

Neville wanted a better explanation. He had been part of the re-building effort for Hogwarts and had been looking forward to its reopening. She should have-- he stopped. This was not a hopeless situation-- he was well-acquainted with those. Neville looked back up McGonagall. She slouched just slightly over her papers. That cemented his decision. McGonagall had never had less than perfect posture in school. He could fix this. "I will find teachers for you," he said. "I can do it without drawing attention."

"I cannot ask you to do that, Mr. Longbottom."

"Professor Longbottom," he corrected her.

Soldiers, by the way, is incomplete. It still has a nice Neville, though.

Do you like evil Nevilles at all? I know a fic with one of those.

I just had to tell you how much I agree with this post! I've had this tab open in my browser since you posted, refreshing for new Neville fics :-D

Talking of which, do you have links for 'Assets, Destruction of Property' and 'Strange Bedfellows'? Also, I wrote a Neville/Draco for Harry Holidays in 2006 - As Good As A Rest. I don't know if it's your cup of tea, but Neville is most definitely competent, and awesome.
