...has anybody ever read A Fire Upon the Deep? And liked it? I'm anticipating (re)reading it soon, and I want some kind of reason to believe that I won't hate it this time.
I read it and enjoyed it a lot. I have only a vague memory of the plot and characters, but the premise, the science fiction aspect of it all, was really fun and interesting.
I read it. I'd like to tell you that it is awesome, but I can't. However, I can tell you I bounced off it like I was entirely made of superball material at LEAST four times, despite loving a lot of Vinge's other stuff. But eventually I forced myself into it, and once I was in, I managed to stay in get to the end, and certain parts of it still stay with me, so - it wasn't terrible or anything.
I read it back when it first came out. I don't recall either understanding it very much, nor enjoying it very much. Certainly I never sought out the sequel, nor any other Vinge.
I feel the same as Spatz--I remember really liking it but not much else about it. Was it the spiders or the dogs? Anyway if you don't think you'll like it then don't read it. Life's too short.
I also read it when it came out, and I loved it. To me it was an engaging story and cool sense-of-wonder science fiction, and I loved the extraterrestrial characters and the galaxy-building of the Zones.
