dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Lydia - bitch please)

Lydia agrees with me: there are limits to what Tumblr is good for.

I like Tumblr to the extent that it's a venue for completely ephemeral interaction that consists of showing each other gifs and having feels about them. But some people post fic to it, apparently, which I find alternately puzzling and grumpy-making. And yet, I have enjoyed some of that fic! And yet I refuse to reblog it because no. So I shall now perform the Doing It Wrong performance art piece that is Reccing Tumblr Fic on Dreamwidth/LiveJournal:

Now You're Standing in a Big Disaster by [tumblr.com profile] gyzym. Derek is doomed, and Stiles doesn't intend to have any regrets when he's gone.

[Untitled] by [tumblr.com profile] saucefactory. In which Dr. Deaton helps Stiles even the playing field.

In Which Derek Has a Nice Month and Gets Thoroughly Freaked Out By It by [tumblr.com profile] jebiwonkenobi. What it says on the tin, with bonus excellent Stiles. ♥

[Untitled Kidfic] by [tumblr.com profile] nightrevelations. In which Derek's niece needs Stiles-cuddles.

There's no way to leave feedback! I'm always like - but! but! why!

But reblogging feels like reposting someone else's fic! It's so hardwired into me not to do that, I'm like NOOOOOOOOOOO *imagine endless scrolling Os here* just at the thought of it.

Yeah, I guess. And that's clearly what the author wants, but still. It doesn't work for me.

You know what tumblr works brilliantly for though? Fanart! It makes it so easy to share fanart! I love that!

I know! I wouldn't repost fanart in my journal, so what gives, right?

I guess the fic thing really is a knee-jerk reaction. If it's posted on tumblr by the author, then it's clearly okay to reblog it. I don't see any reason it should be different for different kinds of fanwork.

Still though. AO3! We have an archive! And it's awesome! Fic should go on the archive!

(BTW - I get all sadface when I have to read fic on LJ now. AO3 has ruined us.)

I'm a stick-to-my-principles apparently as I refuse to read fic on Tumblr. I don't even have a Tumblr but I do follow maybe 3? via my Google reader to skip past the ugly that is Tumblr layouts. Or rather random navigating, piled layers if you're on a smaller screen, mystery meat choice of coloring your links the same color as the background.. to name a few peeves.

So, sadly even as it's gyzym, it's just too annoying. She has an LJ and an AO3 that I follow, I don't get why Tumblr posting?

Thanks for letting me know :)

Embarassing confessiontime - I can't help but feel like DNW to encourage fandom to have Tumblr as the new trend. The prev being fanfiction.net > LJ > DW > AO3 meaning I'm getting old and acting like a grumpy person a lot older than my 35. Sigh. Maybe I'm just too much of a nooo, change is bad.

(Ok, fic archives and personal websites should be in there in that timeline and DW should probably be paralleled rather than as a next step maybe. Oh and I forgot Yahoo groups and mailing lists)

(geocities pages with neon pink text on black background and completely random gifs!)

Or even worse, gifs as backgrounds - I remember someone had a starry background but the stars blinked. Really distracting.

Geocities and angelfire - a historical institution of bad website design. Angelfire's still around though.. I think.

But those blinking stars were the BEST THING EVER back then! You had to put them somewhere! And if your background's gonna be black it might as well be the night sky. It only makes sense.

(Can you tell that I had a geocities page? It was awesomely tacky.)

Oh I did too. And yeah, definitely black. With really green borders because I used pics from Pitch Black as the banner (the green light Johns/Riddick fightscene -"Stay in the light". I might've seen it one time too many LOL). I think I had the fics on grey background though with black text. All links was in really shiny green though. And the left sidebar was... I learned how to make gifs for links. So they were blinking green things /0\

You know, in an effort to understand kids these days, I have a tumblr myself (I just reblog pictures and terrible links and let my awful sense of humour run loose) and yet I still refuse to read fic on it. I am doing what some people did when Dreamwidth happened and saying, no, I'll read your fic if and when you post it somewhere that it makes sense to me to read fic. And I'll even leave feedback on that day because I'll actually be able to. Whether they want to consider that opinion and repost their fic somewhere searchable and permanent and feedback-friendly is up to them.

[personal profile] gen241 2012-09-14 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
thank you so much! I hate that people post good fic on tumblr that I'd never be able to find

Sort of OT and I apologies, but you can <user name= for tumblr now? Thanks for letting me know that.
