It's sort of my weekend!
This is my first full week at the permanent location of my new job (...did I mention the new job? surely I mentioned the new job) and I have to work Saturday, which means I have tomorrow off. So... sort of the weekend, sort of still the work-week. I get to sleep in tomorrow, is the main thing.
With numbers, so I don't have to think of transitions:
1. I get to sleep in tomorrow and then go (indoor) climbing, which I have been too exhausted or otherwise discombobulated to do any earlier in the week. I went for the first time on Saturday (hooray local Groupon!) and promptly came home and joined
disobey_gravity, because that is what a fangirl does when she finds something awesome. She joins the relevant comm. ♥
(It was exhausting and daunting and I fell a lot, but that is what the harness and rope and padded floor are for! And, you know--climbing on things! My inner bookcase-scaling toddler cannot get over being actively encouraged to climb on things.)
2. I shall not mention when, exactly, I have been having periods of time on my hands with access to the internet but not the freedom to visit overtly fannish sites, but the point is: I have been reading Arthur Conan Doyle courtesy of Project Gutenberg. I have already knocked off A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, and am partway into The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
It is both delightful and vaguely embarrassing how often I run across something and am filled with squee because I've recognized something I read in fic or saw in the 2009 movie or in Sherlock.
God knows what will happen if I actually watch the first season of Jeremy Brett episodes, which the internet fairies have kindly supplied to me. I guess either my head will explode or I'll finally be driven to write something. Or I'll finally be driven to write something and then my head will explode.
(Haha, Sherlock kidfic bunny? Sherlock porn bunny? What? No. Surely you jest.)
3. Speaking of writing/head-exploding, I have just made what I think is the fourth start on the Aral/Jole story. Writing is hard, dog bites man, etc.
(Seriously though--I am trying to write Aral Vorkosigan coming to terms, emotionally, with honest polyamory. I BET DRINKING WOULD HELP.)
3a. When I fell into The Mentalist I made a list of the stages I go through when entering a new fandom. The Vorkosigan Saga is essentially a new fandom for me, in terms of writing, although I guess it's been more than a year now--
Anyway, the point is, there is a stage I left off of that list, maybe because it's redundant for The Mentalist, but in most fandoms where I'm significantly emotionally invested sooner or later I plot out an AU too vilely, crushingly depressing to write. (True fact: my first slash fandom was Nsync/popslash. I lovingly plotted out a story where they all contracted HIV from each other. This is more or less why I named myself 'Dira', and it is the reason I never actually wrote anything in popslash.)
Which is to say: I have one for the Vorkosigan Saga now, and I would tell you about it except I'm in the delusional stage where I think I might write it so I can't spoil it. But I guess I've set up camp here, now.
4. So it turns out I'm pretty much making a living wage now. Recent Amazon purchases include: Private Investigator Varg Veum: The Complete First Series (Uhh... sure. Call it whatever you want, it's the first six Varg Veum movies in shiny Region 1 DVD!), I Spy Season 1 (I am officically un-adopting Bill Cosby as my TV Dad. He is too mind-bendingly hot as Scotty. I cannot cope. By which I mean, I LOVE THEM.), and, uh...
Yeah, I bought Diana Gabaldon's graphic novel. Sure she's crazy, but it's Jamie's side of the story!
...Oh God, it's just now occurred to me that it's Jamie's side of the story. Of Outlander. I am suddenly REALLY SCARED of the monster at the end of the book. /o\
(Although apparently this panel was too graphic to be included, so ... surely the rape and torture is not included? Right?)
(Also, in case anyone who doesn't read her blog was wondering, she has posted enough snippets from book-eight-in-progress to greatly dilute at least two of the cliffhangers from An Echo in the Bone. Which is an... interesting... authorial decision but on the bright side now I don't have to wait until 2013 to have some idea what happens next...)
5. Awesome, amazing trailer for Stargate SG-1: The Movie. I really need to go rewatch all ten seasons right now.
6. That reminds me,
kuwdora has made a wonderful Castle vid! Suddenly I See is three solid minutes of all the parts of Castle I generally want to draw big sparkly hearts around. (And, yes, it is even safe for my brother to watch.) Highly recommended for being full of awesomeness.

But I will definitely watch the Jeremy Brett. And I have to tell you, I've already seen the first five episodes of I Spy (the whole run is on Hulu) and it really is amazingly awesome. I mean, when I refer to Bill Cosby as "my TV dad" what I actually mean is "I associate him so strongly with my father I scarcely have words to express it."
And yet: he is manifestly both hot and Kelly's boyfriend (also, surprisingly badass and the one who speaks whichever language the plot requires). There is no way around the awesomeness.

So it did, and yet very little content was lost :-). I was just saying that yours was the second comment I've seen today about how awesome I Spy is.
And also that Jeremy Brett is brilliant-- very physical, inhabits the role completely, you can watch him thinking. And his Holmes is very very strange, and very very queer. And in the first two series, he is just transcendentally beautiful.
And the Grenada stories are slashy as anything-- these were the adaptations where they dealt with the timeline issues and the how many wives did Watson have issue by just... not having Watson get married. At all.

From high-brow to low-brow reasons:
Presents interesting philosophical dilemmas! Family members (okay, mostly Scotty's mom) are included! Shot on location! With banter! Often of the shirtless variety!
(And why do I not have an I Spy icon?)

a. OH MY GOD WHAT WHY ;___________;
b. . . . okay, I can see it. Who was patient zero???
c. If you wrote this, my best friend would probably think it was the greatest thing EVER. Her favorite fic of all time is still Helen's Easy Come, Easy Go. True story!
d. Ahahahah, it is totally redundant in the Mentalist! The vile, crushingly depressing AU is CANON.

b. I don't think they were ever able to establish that with certainty, although I want to say that Chris blamed himself. I wonder if I still have--oh my God, I think I may still have files from that. Huh.
...No, blessedly no real outline exists. I win?
c. Ahaahaha, I remember reading that story in my parents' basement. I had been warned, and I was terrified to read it and yet COULD NOT RESIST.
d. IT REALLY, REALLY IS.

I certainly think Aral could use help getting in touch with his revolutionary tendencies, one way or another.

YES. METHOD WRITING! \o/

OMG, I am totally stealing this idea the next time I...oh, who am I kidding? I have too many actual projects I enjoy going on that occupy my every spare moment during the day. Well, we'll see. I'm tucking it away as an EXCELLENT PLAN!

Via the network, hoping that's okay
\o/ If you've got time, you should write a report for the comm on your first time climbing -- it's really valuable for other people who are considering it. Also I'm always fascinated by other people's experiences. *g*
And, you know--climbing on things! My inner bookcase-scaling toddler cannot get over being actively encouraged to climb on things.
I know. Isn't it the most amazing thing?
(I, er, have to ensure that all bookcases in places I inhabit are structurally sound. Because I will, inevitably, climb on them.)
Re: Via the network, hoping that's okay
And, oh God. Currently all the bookcases I have that are taller than hip-height are from IKEA. Climbing would not end well. *g*

This is a post of Yay!
1. Yay, climbing!
2. (Actually, I'm pretty neutral about this, but I'm glad you are enjoying it.
3. Given that popslash was one of the places I went to not have to think about acquaintances dying of AIDS, I'm really glad that you didn't write that story. Thank you.
4. Varg! I Spy! \o/ !
5. Fun!
6. Yes! Exactly!
Re: This is a post of Yay!
3. The friend who introduced me to popslash flatly forbade me to write it, or post it if I did write it, although I didn't argue much. I was still a confirmed lurker at that point.
4. VARG! On my TV! I am inordinately excited about this. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-11 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)Forgive me for barging right in but I happened across your posts while trying to hunt down some kind (any kind) of Varg Veum fanfiction. I had already reached the point where I was convinced that it’s one of THOSE times (where I’m the only one adoring a certain series / book / you name it and in desperate need of company) … when I stumbled upon your entries. I think I squeaked loud enough for the entire house to hear it :D
So I wondered: Would you mind if I butted right in? I might not be much in terms of a fanfiction writer (with English not being my first language and all; I used to write stuff in German and I’ve always wanted to get around to writing something in English as well… alas it hasn’t happened so far) ) but I might make a hell of a groupie :D
So… I think I like the cover of "Private Investigator Varg Veum" more than I like the German ones. There's actually some kind of COLOUR involved. (Oh, and by the way: Are you able to choose the language you want to watch the movies in? Because I can't. Stupid ARD decided not to deliver the Norwegian version :( And I so wanted to hear the original voices.)
One day in the near future I’m going to find out how to use OpenID and then I’m going to stop lurking around anonymously like Creepy McSnoop :)
Greetings from Germany
Illya

I know there are a few other people in fandom who are also excited about Varg Veum, but alas I haven't seen any fic yet. Have you considered participating in the Yuletide fic exchange? I know there were some people who offered to write Varg Veum last year, and it's already been nominated again for this year, so it might be a way to get a story written--or get pushed into writing one!
Also, I don't know if you're interested in fanworks other than fic, but there is a vid, which is what got me to watch Varg Veum in the first place: It Comes and Goes in Waves by

I think Hamre should consider himself extraordinarily lucky that there's still a ten page excerpt from my textbook standing between me and fully contemplating the possibilities of writing fanfiction. If I were to write any kind of story right now, I would probably punch his lights out. That's because I reached the scene in Tornerose where he lets Isachsen loose on Varg's house. Now I generally like Hamre (to the point where I wonder whether I like him more than Varg...) but this annoyed the heck out of me - so I turned the movie off. If I were Varg I wouldn't be speaking to him again until he apologizes (or makes up for it properly). I mean... it's Varg's HOME. Grrr.
Now that I've spent about two hours poring over your link and the Yuletide FAQ (and all those shiny fandoms. They've listed The City of Dreaming Books. I've been loving The City of Dreaming Books for ages...) I think I finally get the system. And ... I SO want to participate.
So now I'm going to spend the next days thinking about all these fandoms and characters and finding someone who's willing to put up with my spelling and grammar errors as well as my atrocious sentence structure (never mind my long erratic ramblings when the story is not going the way I wanted it to).

My story: "Fioler er blå", starts a bit into "In The Dark All Wolves Are Grey"(, the second one after "Sleeping Beauty"/"Tornerose" - after "The Woman In The Fridge" where Veum is out of town). I should also warn for implied slash. :)

The new movie is having it's Norwegian release Nov. 4. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU_IsleeGWI
It doesn't look like it has very much to do with the book though.

I've been slowly collecting the new films on DVD, usually when my Norwegian woodcarving instructor goes back to visit family. :) I'm really happy to keep spreading love for this series through the States.
Thanks so much for the community links! I often feel that my language class is not a good fit, so I'm interested in finding other ways to keep working.

The learn_nordic comm. has heaps and heaps of good resources and will answer requests for specific ones. And when you feel ready for it, you can try out your Norwegian skills at scandafandom. Hope to see you there (but it is perfectly okay to lurk to). ;)
