1) So to make a long and boring story short, on Thursday and Friday I thought I had medication side effects and on Saturday it became obvious that I had a cold and as it turns out being sick sucks and is boring. It was the first time in a while that I got the crushing fatigue aspect of being sick, which was frustrating and ruined my fun weekend plans (did not see Pacific Rim AND did not get to play board games), but I am sufficiently over it now to be going back to work. Partly from sheer boredom.

2) Thanks to the above I have listened to the first 11 or 12 episodes of Welcome to Night Vale, and it's... odd. I mean, obviously the podcast itself is deliberately and performatively odd, but also my reaction to it. I will probably like it better if I go and read a lot of fic and get really invested in Cecil and Carlos, but on the strength of the thing itself it's just falling into the nonplussed area in my brain where absurd humor goes, because I keep trying to make it make sense, and it strenuously resists sense-making.

I mean, I can't build an interior model of Cecil. I can't see how his mind works, or how anyone's mind works in Night Vale. It doesn't make sense. It also doesn't have any embarrassment squick to it, unlike a lot of the humor that makes me cringe, so instead it just... baffles me, on whatever level. I keep listening to it like maybe this time I will understand. But probably what I should do is stop now and go read fic. Please feel free to tell me which fic I should go read.

3) Then I was seized by a fit of longing for Castle, which, not-coincidentally, I got hooked on while stuck home with the flu for most of a week. That's a good show and I like it and it makes me happy, you guys. The ladies have shiny hair and generally don't die! People are generally not revealed to have suffered mind-numbing levels of trauma for stupid reasons!

So then I started trying to figure out how to do a Teen Wolf Castle AU, and my brain locked up on which way to cast it: Stiles the goofy mystery writer and his grumpy detective muse Derek, or Derek the grumpy serious mystery writer and Stiles his (seemingly) happy-go-lucky muse. Either way, Allison is in Espo's place as the Army veteran sniper detective, which makes me incredibly happy.

4) So then I did the logical thing and finally started watching Elementary. THIS IS ALSO A GOOD SHOW WHICH MAKES ME HAPPY. I am three episodes in and ♥ ♥ ♥

But I do suspect that, like Castle, it's going to be a show where I get what I want from the show and I can just sit and watch it and feel happy because, look! Joan and Sherlock being Joan and Sherlock! Look at how much Jeff Davis is not in charge of this show! This pleases me. ♥

5) So yeah, last night's Teen Wolf. It was actually... pretty good? Like, a good episode of Teen Wolf, not breaking the curve or anything, but after the last several weeks that was really confusing and I'm not sure what to do with it. Some things I liked! )

So in conclusion they will probably ruin it all next week but right now I am actually feeling all warm and fuzzy toward my show. Oh show. You got me.

This is my first full week at the permanent location of my new job (...did I mention the new job? surely I mentioned the new job) and I have to work Saturday, which means I have tomorrow off. So... sort of the weekend, sort of still the work-week. I get to sleep in tomorrow, is the main thing.

With numbers, so I don't have to think of transitions:

1. I get to sleep in tomorrow and then go (indoor) climbing, which I have been too exhausted or otherwise discombobulated to do any earlier in the week. I went for the first time on Saturday (hooray local Groupon!) and promptly came home and joined [community profile] disobey_gravity, because that is what a fangirl does when she finds something awesome. She joins the relevant comm. ♥

(It was exhausting and daunting and I fell a lot, but that is what the harness and rope and padded floor are for! And, you know--climbing on things! My inner bookcase-scaling toddler cannot get over being actively encouraged to climb on things.)

2. I shall not mention when, exactly, I have been having periods of time on my hands with access to the internet but not the freedom to visit overtly fannish sites, but the point is: I have been reading Arthur Conan Doyle courtesy of Project Gutenberg. No spoilers, just rambling. )

3. Speaking of writing/head-exploding, I have just made what I think is the fourth start on the Aral/Jole story. Writing is hard, dog bites man, etc.

(Seriously though--I am trying to write Aral Vorkosigan coming to terms, emotionally, with honest polyamory. I BET DRINKING WOULD HELP.)

3a. I tell myself the worst bedtime stories. )

4. So it turns out I'm pretty much making a living wage now. Recent Amazon purchases include: Private Investigator Varg Veum: The Complete First Series (Uhh... sure. Call it whatever you want, it's the first six Varg Veum movies in shiny Region 1 DVD!), I Spy Season 1 (I am officically un-adopting Bill Cosby as my TV Dad. He is too mind-bendingly hot as Scotty. I cannot cope. By which I mean, I LOVE THEM.), and, uh...

One other thing which I feel kind of sheepish about buying. )

5. Awesome, amazing trailer for Stargate SG-1: The Movie. I really need to go rewatch all ten seasons right now.

6. That reminds me, [personal profile] kuwdora has made a wonderful Castle vid! Suddenly I See is three solid minutes of all the parts of Castle I generally want to draw big sparkly hearts around. (And, yes, it is even safe for my brother to watch.) Highly recommended for being full of awesomeness.

I have just one reaction to that whole episode and it is this:

- I'm going back to work tomorrow! I am a little scared of what I will find there! I've been away for three days before, but this whole flu thing is weird and disorienting.

- YULETIDE!!! I think this year was the fastest ever turnaround from Yuleterror to knowing what to write and being really, really excited about it! And now, canon review and the slow mutation from the original idea to whatever I end up actually writing. This should be fun.

Yulewriter, if you have come to stalk me, my hopefully not totally unhelpful letter is here. Have fun! Everything will be fine!

- So on Thursday I pimped myself into Castle through the power of low-grade fever and contrarianism. Yesterday I ran out of Castle episodes to watch. So this morning I started on The Mentalist.

JANE ♥♥♥

Fic recs - Castle or The Mentalist - gladly accepted.

I made a poll earlier, which (I hope) I posted only to Dreamwidth because it seemed at the time like crossposting and editing to point people to the poll and etc. etc. was a heroic task completely beyond me--

Anyway! I posted a poll, asking what I should watch while lying in my sickbed, and the poll was extremely helpful because I watched results come in and said, "Why is everyone telling me to watch LEVERAGE? I WANT THEM TO VOTE FOR CASTLE."

So then I downloaded some Castle and piled a lot more blankets on my bed because I couldn't stop shivering and apparently my temperature was 99.8, and then I watched the first episode and ♥ ♥ ♥. Hopefully not just because of the fever.

And now I will eat some dinner and wait very very patiently for the internet fairies to bring me some more.

I mean, I'm sure Leverage is awesome and I'm totally going to watch it at some point! But Castle!

Not crossposted because it seems like an inordinate amount of work right now.

Poll #1693 What should I stare blankly at in my sickbed?
Open to: Registered Users, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 53

Here are some shows I have been Meaning to Watch but haven't yet. Which do you think would make good sickbed entertainment for me?
