dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Matt - Squee by iconzicons)
I'm on [livejournal.com profile] iuliamentis and [livejournal.com profile] helaasindakaas's lovely new couch, stealing somebody's wireless, to say a) hi! I'm still not dead! despite having to get up at four in the morning yesterday to get on the train to come out here, and I am almost caught up on my friends list and I love you all (and I also love John and Aeryn very much, and also Bond)

and, b) look! Yuletide recs! This is just the list of what I remembered to write down while binge-reading on Christmas morning, as I haven't had a chance to read anything since then:

Batman Begins, College of Magics, Equilibrium, Invisible Man, Julian Kestrel, Temeraire, and Penny Arcade )

May May.

Things what I have discovered:

Netflix = teh crack. I realize everyone else knew this. I knew it myself, in an intellectual way, which is why I didn't get it until school was (almost) over, but dear god. It's kind of embarrassing how often I go and stare at my queue, not with any intention of rearranging any of the ninety-five items, but just to enjoy knowing that I will get to see all these things. Movies where things blow up! Movies where people where pretty clothes and curtsey and ride horses! Season four of Farscape!

Public libraries! Are filled with books! Okay, I already knew this one, but it had been a while since it was actually meaningful, but then I got (via INTERLIBRARY LOAN, because I know how the system works and WILL NOT BE STOPPED) Leave Myself Behind, which was recced by [livejournal.com profile] misspamela and was great fun in the specific sense of being a book written in a very authentic teenaged-boy voice. So, y'know, sometimes you want to hit the narrator with a skillet, but it's fun. Related discovery: It's not just people on LJ who write about boys falling in love.

If you watch too much West Wing all at once it does funny things to your brain! Or at least, to my brain. [livejournal.com profile] iuliamentis, with whom I watched the entirety of season six this weekend, informs me that it didn't make her spend an entire shower pondering Peak Oil. But in my defense, I feel that the question of "Who should Josh have sex with?" is easily answered and requires very little pondering: all of the above.

Holy crap, Farscape! [livejournal.com profile] iuliamentis is patiently dragging me through the series (I forget how much I love it until we're actually watching it), though with judicious skipping. I can't figure out whether season three would have been more or less or differently ZOMG if we had watched more (um. any?) Moya episodes, but. *flails*

They don't give out DCI badges in lucky bags. I still don't know what the hell a lucky bag is, but Gene is the MAN.

ETA: Today is May 30! Which means tomorrow Amazon will bring me Numb3rs on DVD! BLOOPER REEL!

So, uh. I've been at [livejournal.com profile] iuliamentis's place for going on forty-eight hours now, and have made an excellent start on picking up three new fandoms. Iulia got hooked on Farscape with the able assistance of [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat, and of course she had to share with me the hotness, the muppets, and the atonal choral music. wheeeeeeeeee!

And then, of course, because life is JUST. TOO. CHEERY. we had to watch the Battlestar Galactica miniseries, so that I could finally get properly started on my inevitable slide into BSG.

And then, well, then there's CSI.

I watched my first episode (6x01) on Monday, right before my job interview (because nothing prepares you for a job interview like PEOPLE SOUP.) And then I had to see the immediately preceding Quentin Tarantino two-parter, and [livejournal.com profile] merryish helped me out with that, and I watched it on Tuesday, while skipping class to get packed for the weekend not that I skipped class to watch CSI really I fucking swear. Grave Danger turned out to be the fanfic crack of episodes, such that I squeed incoherently through almost the whole thing despite having a profoundly limited ability to, y'know, identify characters on sight. I spent the following twenty-four hours remembering random bits and squeeing all over again and wanting to rewatch it much like I wanted to reread [livejournal.com profile] alienseas' lovely lovely Gil/Nick WIP.

Somewhere in Pennsylvania, driving up, I heard The Who's "Who Are You" on the radio and cranked it and squeed some more.

I somehow restrained myself from rewatching Grave Danger for the thirty-six hours I spent at my parents' house, but once I got to Iulia's I only barely made it through the hockey game before begging her to watch it with me. Of course, despite my computer's crankiness, we couldn't stop there, so we also watched 6x01 to get the followup (and THAT is why I was late opening the Open Thread, okay? okay? that's why. but I would have done it. there were technical difficulties.)

After Numb3rs (in which Don wore very fetching pants, Charlie needed to cut his hair just a little bit, and Lou Diamond Phillips wanted to have sex with both of them, preferably at the same time, sorry, that's really all I took in and nothing you didn't see in the promo) Iulia and I went to the store and picked up snacks, milk, a gallon of Hawaiian punch and a bottle of twelve dollar vodka. Then we watched more Farscape and found it all unbearably hilarious, and in the morning I woke up with a bit of a headache and a red mustache. I'm sure you can cleverly fill in the blanks, but just let me say: wicked. fucking. classy.

Then yesterday there were more muppets and hot people, and Battlestar Galactica, and then Iulia and I managed to get our hands on the CSI pilot. And watch it. And make a snap decision with an hour to go before the hockey game that we NEEDED MORE CSI OH GOD RIGHT NOW. So we hit the Blockbuster and rented the first two discs of season one. We watched one episode last night, after the Wings game (which they managed to win! eventually!) and then, uh, three more so far today. Three more to go, and then we will tear ourselves away to go hang out with [livejournal.com profile] fairmer, who I have not seen since I moved, but, uh, first we feed the hot-woobie-multi-boy-and-girlfriended-crime-procedural monkey.
