Slightly belated due to traveling over the New Year while also coming down with a cold...

Questions mostly swiped/adapted from a year in review meme I saw going around--if you think of others, ask and I’ll try to answer and/or add them in for next year, and anyone who wants to reuse this question set, feel free! :D

(I bookmark virtually everything I read--definitely everything I’m willing to admit having read--so I’m working from my AO3 bookmarks in answering these. I haven’t been, like, taking notes all year. Although I probably will in 2018 now that I’ve thought of it.)

1. First fic you read in 2017?

A Bit of Slap and Tickle by @galwednesday (3k, Bucky/Steve, T), featuring domesticity and tickle fights. :D

2. Last fic you read in 2017?

what’s left of my heart’s still made of gold by defcontwo (4k, Kent Parson, T), because Kent deserves nothing but Kesha references and nights out at drag shows, post-3.26.

(If you don’t know what any of that means, just pour one out for all us beleaguered souls trying to cope with new Check, Please! canon and the holidays at the same time and move on with your blissful existence. Or go read all of @omgcheckplease, it only takes like an hour and a half and then you can gnash your teeth and wail at me!!)

3. Your favorite fic you read in 2017?

Okay so I have a “Favorite” tag for bookmarks that I used... 16 times in 2017, which is really not that many as a PROPORTION of all the things I bookmarked, okay, it’s like... under 3%, for sure. So I have LOTS of favorites, is what I am saying, but the one that springs to mind as, like, unproblematic fave that I would reread pretty much any time is:

On a Pale Horse by @leveragehunters (26k, Bucky/Steve, T), in which Steve is cursed into the form of a horse and is kind of THE WORST HORSE but also THE BEST HORSE and Bucky rescues him and IT IS SO GREAT YOU GUYS OKAY JUST READ IT.

4. The best fic you read in 2017?

Okay so for just sheer jaw-dropping originality + general amazingness + making me cry the hardest, I have to give this one to:

cascades. by @robotmango (152k, Bucky/Steve, M), in which Steve comes back out of the ice under his own (new and unpredictable) power a few years after crashing the Valkyrie, and things just continue going sideways and upside down from there. And also I cried for like an hour toward the end. BUT IT’S GREAT AND YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY READ IT! Just, you know, maybe not in a public place? (There is also a podfic; I assume I would die if I ever attempted to listen to it the way I usually listen to long pod-things, which is while driving.)

5. The most “I don’t even go here but this is awesome” fic you read in 2017?

Stuck on the Puzzle by thespectaclesofthor (236k, Iron Bull/Cullen Rutherford, E), and, uh, I’ve never played Dragon Age: Inquisition but it turns out there’s a pretty good wiki and also I will happily read a 236k original novel of dudes in some fantasyland, one of whom has horns and a sort of culturally ingrained aromanticism, in a fucked-up-but-getting-better D/s relationship?? Man I should reread this sometime when I... have an entire weekend free...

6. How many bookmarks did you make this year?

681.

7. Who was your favorite fanfic author in 2017?

I bookmarked 20 fics by @leveragehunters in 2017 including my aforementioned favorite and at least one other (Balance) that I also tagged “Favorite” and I think that makes her the winner this year!.

I also bookmarked 14 fics by @sineala including stuff in The Professionals, a fandom I was in for about ten minutes in 2004, and The Eagle, everyone’s favorite Yuletide fandom, and all sorts of comics-based permutations of Steve/Tony, so honorable mention for “I will follow you pretty much anywhere.”

And likewise @maculategiraffe, who is writing the 400k-and-counting WIP epic set in the world of a video game I’d barely heard of before she started writing it OF MY HEART, about which more below.

8. What was the longest fic you read in 2017?

Stuck on the Puzzle, above, was the longest standalone fic at 236k.

How Life Goes On, The Way It Does by @maculategiraffe, currently 407k in 12 stories, is the longest single narrative. It’s mostly-post-canon, for one particular thread of canon, in Fallout 4, and I love Nora and her ever-increasing found family SO MUCH, you guys, I cannot even tell you.

9. What was the shortest fic you read in 2017?

This question all by itself is going to be responsible for me drastically expanding my bookmark tagging and/or starting to take a lot of notes on this stuff in the coming year, because it turns out not to be easy to search out the answer. BUT I DID, JUST FOR YOU.

Days in Gold by @gilajames (Simon Illyan/Alys Vorpatril, 547 words, G) was the shortest fic.

But! The smallest word count story-ish thing this year was Sweet and Nasty by @ponderosa121, (Steve/Sam, 166 words, M) a comic-with-transcript made for me for the SamSteve Gift Exchange.

10. What was your favorite fandom to read fic from this year?

So of the 681 fics I bookmarked this year, a little over half--364--were in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and 95 were in Check, Please! which I got into starting in July.

Two weeks in a row! Look at me go! I managed to function like a human being for like the entire day today, it was sort of amazing. So now I will continue my impressive accomplishments by making a blog post.

Books: I'm five or six chapters into The Soldier's Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian, and after the first three chapters I stopped and bought the next two books in the series on Amazon, so, yes, am enjoying! And juuust stuck a bookmark in Matt Ruff's Lovecraft Country to start reading next. (I usually have one ebook and one physical book on the go at a given time, and I'm trying to remember to read some of the unread books I actually own in between taking out all sorts of things from the library. We'll see how that goes when I'm using the quiet study room at the library five days a week to get writing and other work done.)

Books finished:

Hello Forever by Sarina Bowen, a loosely connected ~sequel~ to Goodbye Paradise. Both of these m/m romances where one or both heroes have faced severe homophobia were originally published under a different name, and have been republished this year as Sarina Bowen titles. AND THEY ARE GREAT. If you are into that kind of angst, which. I am. As it turns out. I loved the way this one handled Cax's resistance to being with a guy, giving him a situation that he feels trapped by for utterly legitimate reasons, and the way his resistance gives way piece by piece (and then, as they say, all at once). <3

The Proposal by Mary Balogh, the first book of the Survivors' Club series, in which it becomes clear that this series is actually a spinoff of at least two OTHER series so now I need a family tree with all of Mary Balogh's books clearly indicated on it to figure out what ELSE I want to read because these are delightful. (Notwithstanding the occasional startling anachronism, like a heroine comparing something from which nothing escapes to a black hole. In 1819 or so. BUT WHATEVER, RECOVERY LOVE STORIES FOR EVERYONE.)

Fic: Today was another day featuring the blessing of a WIP update, this time from Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail which is of course The Best. The Olds!! <3______<3 (also the endnotes say there was a huge continuity error in this chapter but I'm reading at the same pace as chapters are posting so I have totally lost track of continuity anyway so it was just delightful.) Otherwise I have six tabs open, 155 things marked for later, and 34 marked to reread. Oh and now that I have a physical copy I am slowly making my way through Not Without You, which is staggeringly beautiful and A Delight. <3 <3 <3

Fic finished:
(A sampling of stuff I’ve bookmarked recently–you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

I Do (please say you want me) by [tumblr.com profile] ceeainthereforthat (Bucky/Steve, E, 82k) - Bucky is a professional dominant, and Steve is the son of a vice president who grew up in the public eye; they meet running together in the same DC neighborhood, and just when they're starting to actually get involved, Bucky's professional life becomes front page news. Steve proceeds to Be Maximum Steve Rogers about it and refuses to cut off contact or throw Bucky under the bus--and for the sake of PR it's decided that Steve should play out a whirlwind romance with Bucky instead, getting married (with a pre-nup guaranteeing Bucky millions of dollars upon their scheduled divorce five years later). EXCEPT GUESS WHAT THEY FALL IN FABULOUSLY KINKY LOVE. Ughhh this was so great, and I adored the pace of reveals and the way they kept edging further and further into actual intimacy. <3 <3 <3

Just Spit It Out by [tumblr.com profile] PorcupineGirl (Bitty/Jack, G, 2k) - What happens when you live in a first-words soulmark universe and you hear your soulmate say the words on your wrist--and then realize that YOU now need to say the words HE'S been waiting for for his entire life. And you are, say, a deeply anxious Canadian hockey robot. IT MIGHT BE DIFFICULT. But hooray for fate (and Shitty). <3

All I Ever Wanted by [tumblr.com profile] sevenfists (Sid/Geno, E, 10k) - A really lovely story about two dudes finally being ready to be in love with each other. And doing some high altitude training during their bye week, because Sidney Crosby.

Books: Currently in the middle of Abroad by Liz Jacobs, Who Is One Of Us, and about to start reading... one of the two books I still have checked out from the library about the Chicago River and what its deal is.

Books finished: I just finished rereading Persuasion and IT CONTINUES TO BE THE BEST OF THE TWO JANE AUSTEN NOVELS I HAVE EVER ACTUALLY READ.

To the surprise of no one, I did in fact mentally work out the AU where Bitty is Anne, and then [personal profile] staranise lured me into joining her contemplation of the AU where JACK is Anne and in conclusion I am definitely not writing any Persuasion AUs ever.

...Because I am totally onto "what if Jack hadn't gotten an NCAA waiver to play at Samwell after playing in the QMJHL" AUs now.

Ahem. Where was I. READING THINGS, RIGHT.

Fic: Still 15 WIPs bookmarked! [archiveofourown.org profile] maculategiraffe's Fallout 4 series updated today and IT IS GREAT AND MIGHT EAT YOUR LIFE!! I've managed to get my Marked for Later list on AO3 down to... 99! Although my "To reread" bookmark tag is up to 39.

Fic finished:

(A sampling of stuff I’ve bookmarked recently--you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

the black lake by alcibiades (Bucky/Steve, T, 9k) Ohhh boy I hadn't had my heart shredded by a recovering!Bucky story in a while, so this was. OH BUCKY HONEY. PLEASE KEEP GETTING BETTER.

In So Many Words by alocalband (Nursey/Dex, M, 17k) In which Nurse writes stories that... all... seem... to be... the same... story. And they're all about him and Dex even when they're NOT ABOUT HIM AND DEX. <3

Short Circuit by Chiyume (Bucky/Steve, E, 20k) Bucky's arm gets damaged and starts giving him an... unusual... variety of sensory feedback every time it's touched. Which would be a lot easier for him to explain to Steve if he and Steve weren't both firmly convinced that the other isn't interested in him like that. (I would love about a million more stories about Bucky's arm getting cross-wired like this, but this one was definitely A GREAT START. :D)

You Make Me Look Legitimate. by Lanna Michaels (Bitty/Jack, G, 3k) LANNA WROTE FIC FOR MEEEEE ABOUT BITTY GOING TO THE 2018 OLYMPICS AND IT IS ADORABLE AND GREAT!!! <3 <3 <3
dira: Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Default)
So I haven't done this in... six months, I think, but today has been a really good day! I did all the stuff I meant to do during my workday!! So now I'm gonna go for broke and also talk about reading stuff, WITNESS MEEE!!!

Ahem.

Books: I just in the last five minutes finally decided to stop reading Firestorm at Peshtigo, which is great but also, you know, about a whole lot of people dying horribly, and go reread Persuasion in which, afaik, no one burns to death at all. Hopefully I can make it through that without actually plotting a Check, Please! Persuasion AU but that New Fandom Energy is strong so I'm not exactly holding my breath. I also just started reading Priest by Sierra Simone, which had been kicking around my Kindle TBR collection for a year or so. I was kinda dubious about it and then read the author's note re: being brought up Catholic and still having a lot of feelings about Catholicism and spirituality and was like OH MY GOD, YOU'RE ME, so. Chapter 1 was good! :D

Books finished: ...Okay not QUITE during the past week, but the last book I finished reading was His Missing Pieces by M. A. Innes. It's M/M ageplay romance, as in one of the heroes knows at the start of the book that what he's really looking for in a relationship is someone who won't be freaked out by him e.g. wearing a diaper during sex--and since he's a college student carrying a torch for his gay-but-presumed-vanilla best friend, this all seems pretty insurmountable. (SPOILER: NOT INSURMOUNTABLE AFTER ALL.)

I was kind of ???? at a few points--Bryan's MOM knowing about his super-duper-secret kink came the closest to convincing me to stop reading--but the author seems to know what she's doing here (the mom thing is a result of overly-helpful internet-monitoring software when Bryan was a young teen, as it turns out, and his mom doing her best to be accepting and supportive). This is book one of a three-book arc in which, I'm guessing, the boys figure out how exactly to conduct a kinky relationship or indeed any relationship, but the first book was a delightful start and I'm looking forward to the second.

Fic: I have 15 WIPs bookmarked, so technically I guess I am in the middle of reading... at least 15 things? I also have 108 stories Marked for Later at the AO3, plus 29 bookmarked with the To Reread tag.

Fic finished:

(A sampling of stuff I’ve bookmarked recently--you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

Braced Myself by PorcupineGirl (Bitty/Jack, T). Ahhhhhh delicious extra-canonical angst!! Jack's anxiety being CORRECT and Jack RUSHING TO GEORGIA to see Bitty after a horrible Christmas Eve car accident, complete with beside vigil + coming out to Bitty's parents. SO DELICIOUS AND LOVELY AND GOOD YES I WOULD LIKE TEN MORE PLEASE. :D

Tony Stark and the Mysterious Marksman by Sineala (Tony/Bucky, T). Ohhh boy. Noir!Tony meets Comics-verse hot-pants wearing (nineteen-year-old SAS-trained sharpshooter) Bucky, and secret-identity hijinks and competence porn ensue. :D :D :D Plus it was written for CapRBB, so there's lovely fanart!! :D

Anywhere on This Road by Sineala (Marcus/Esca, E) Hi, it is possible I am reading, like, all of Sineala's fic this summer, and relatedly having a The Eagle renaissance?? <3__________<3 MARCUS AND ESCA ILU oh god this is so great. Esca! All suspicious and wary and angry!! Marcus! All big and Roman and trying to be kind and determinedly shameless about what he wants! ...So like basically canon but with the porn bits written out so you don't have to imagine them?? UGH, SO GREAT. (Oh man maybe I should reread Passion & Profession????)

This seems like a good habit, and a good antidote to a just-crushing-enough-to-be-very-distracting headache. So! Five things I'm grateful for tonight:

1. My apartment with heat included in the rent is nice and toasty despite the cold wind that is literally rattling the windows.

2. My new book is selling well and nine lovely people have reviewed it on Amazon!

3. This long and complicated and lovely Teen Wolf a/b/o fic which made an excellent antidote to all the adulting I had to do today.

4. The grocery store had the tub of freshly-packed shredded roast chicken AND the bread freshly baked with roasted garlic, so my inability to actually assemble components into proper meals did not deter me from having a tasty and semi-respectable dinner tonight.

5. The lovely [personal profile] alby_mangroves' really good and helpful beta on the fic I will be posting Very Soon Now, once I am done carefully considering whether the Winter Soldier SHOULD be carrying more knives, and what I was even trying to say in that really muddled paragraph....

(It’s supposed to be Wednesday, for alliteration, but I am not that organized this week, so. Thursday! Because I figure that you might like to know what I’m reading as well as what I’m writing?)

Books:

In addition to my handful of “haven’t admitted I’m not going to go back and finish it” books, I’m currently reading Interface by Stephen Bury, a book (in fact, the very same elderly paperback copy) [personal profile] iulia has reread every election season of the last 16 years or so, and I have somehow never read at all. Until now!

I’m also somewhere in the middle of listening to the audiobook of Glitterland by Alexis Hall, which is hilarious in audio format, but I’ve gotten to the part where the protagonist is going to Make Really Bad Choices and so I put it down a couple of weeks ago and haven’t listened since. (Seriously though, in audio it is even more apparent than it is in text that Glitterland is the story of Strindberg and Helium falling in love. Which is beautiful, but not without perils.)

Books finished:

Confiscating Charlie: I don’t remember when I bought this–it’s a novelette, so a very compressed erotic romance, definitely calling out to the part of your id that is into bodice-ripping (het) romances, with the rich and powerful hero and innocent 19-year-old heroine and a little bondage and you-belong-to-me thrown in. Honestly… less rape-y than I was concerned it would be from the title?

The Usual Path to Publication: 27 stories about 27 ways in: A collection of delightful short essays from authors about how they “made it,” including many touching on the question of what the hell it even means to “make it” as a professional or published writer. Upbeat, even though not all of them are unambiguous success stories.

Sutphin Boulevard: More or less everyone I know who reads m/m romance has yelled at me at some point to read Santino Hassell, and I finally read this and it was good! …I also stopped reading it for about 36 hours halfway through because I was dreading the character making A Bad Decision (he actually didn’t make that particular bad decision, but the plot is definitely driven by Bad Decisions) (and also by a kind of maddening refusal to accept being in love with one’s best friend who one has already had sex with in the first few chapters of the book, ugh, BOYS).

Fic:

I have 12 tabs open + 45 things marked for later on AO3 + 4 comment notifications for hydratrashmeme fills sitting in my inbox.

Fic finished:

(A sampling of stuff I’ve bookmarked recently.)

All Is Good That Is Desired by [archiveofourown.org profile] archwrites - Bucky/Peggy/Steve sex pollen!!

The well-fought fight by Sororising - Sam/Steve, comparing notes on growing up bi in their respective eras.

Speechless by [archiveofourown.org profile] sara_holmes - Bucky/Clint, Bucky has trouble speaking and decides to learn ASL, Clint is his teacher! Sweet & lovely AU.

Aaaand my favorite thing I read on the hydratrashmeme this week is The True Repairman Will Repair Man, which is a WIP, currently up to Part 9/?, and is being written for a prompt where Bucky insists that all the sex he had with members of HYDRA during his captivity was consensual, and can’t understand why Steve thinks it wasn’t. So far nothing in his past is really described–the story is in Steve’s POV–so it’s doing the monster-just-offscreen horror thing in a deeply unnerving and awesome way. Caveat lector!
