I am convinced that as soon as I move away to another state to go to grad school (which is to say, as soon as I'm living 500 miles away from all the menfolk in my life), my car is going to explode. One day I will get out of the car, slam it shut, and it will simply collapse and fall apart. This will be all my fault for Not Understanding Cars.

In the meantime, we just have days like today, when I go to Speedy to get my shocks done (a mere six months after the nice guys who change my oil told me I needed to...) and, ulp. Pay a whole bunch of money. Suspect I'm being taken advantage of, but I can't actually ask any of the automotively knowledgeable guys I know, because they'll just yell at me for not talking to them before I ponied up the money. Basically, I paid $100 for parts and, uh, $400 for not having to ask my best friend's dad (an automotive engineer, who offered) to fix my car. Which in the final analysis was worth it to me. Because, yes.

Tomorrow: oil change.
Monday: call the dealership and see what's to be done about my speedometer. It hasn't functioned in the two years that I've had the car, and I'm thinking that one of those accessories that's very important for a multi-state and international road trip is, y'know, a working speedometer.
