Nov. 22nd, 2003 09:00 pmWoke up at 8:30 this morning. Turned on the stereo, went back to sleep.
Woke up again at noon, glanced at the clock, thought, Hmm, the game's on, I should get up. Went back to sleep.
Woke up again about fifteen minutes later with
iuliamentis standing over me, holding the phone. "It's your mom," she said, "I don't think your grandfather's okay." [As of now, as far as I know, he pretty much is.]
My mom told me he'd been taken into emergency surgery, and would I go pick up my grandmother and take her to the hospital. Yes, of course I would. Okay, she'd call me back. I got up and hit the bathroom, which is when she called me back. When I called *her* back, she said I didn't have to pick up my grandmother, my uncle was already on his way, but would I go to the hospital? Sure.
Several minutes of rushing around. Dress. Borrow cell phone. Ask roommates to pack doughnuts and phone
daveamongus, because why not spread information in a rational manner?
And then just... nothing much. Drove to the hospital, sat in the waiting room. Grandma and uncle showed up, then Dad, then Mom, then other aunt and uncle. Then a nurse came out and asked for my Grandma, and it turned out he hadn't even gone into surgery yet. Went back and saw him. Turns out the surgery is to locate the source of air in his abdominal cavity--painful but not life-threatening, despite my grandmother's penchant for bursting into tears and insisting that he must not die. Came out and sat some more in the waiting room. The UM-OSU game was on, so I saw more of it than I otherwise would have (thus keeping up my personal track record for at-home OSU games; I don't think I've ever seen one in its entirety, despite having season tickets all four years). Went out for food, which is when my mother finally said, "You don't have to stay, you can go home."
So home I went, after waiting a decent interval. Called
daveamongus and updated him, and then turned to Iulia and said, "So. How about some Queer as Folk?"
And, bless her, she said, "I was waiting for you to say that," and handed me the remote.
