pearl_o, and I am cheating a little: two of these lines are the first line of the prologue, because the first line of the first chapter is either way too obvious or way too unrecognizable.
Also I chose six books, because I think I may well own the only extant copy of one of them. So basically I have flung the rules to the wind and am demanding that you identify an arbitrary number of books that I like quite a lot from lines located somewhere toward the front. Here are the rules, though, just for reference:
1. Choose five of your all time favorite books.
2. Take the first sentence of the first chapter and make a list in your journal.
3. Don't reveal the author or the title of the book.
4. Now everyone try and guess.
1. His first sensation was of vague discomfort, a damp chilliness which almost immediately exploded into wet cold so piercing it seemed his heart would freeze and shatter; next he was aware of cold rain beating on his head, melting away his hair and scalp . . .
2. Many years later she remembered how her parents had looked to her when she was a small child: her father as tall as a tree, and merry and bright and golden, with her beautiful black-haired mother at his side. Deerskin by Robin McKinley -
helenish, inter alia.
3. The shouts sounded like murmurs to her numbed ears, murmurs far away and having nothing to do with her.
4. Memories haunted the Ghostwood, brittle as the twigs that splintered like tiny bones under Mark's boots. Nobody's Son by Sean Stewart -
brighidestone
5. It was predictable, in hindsight. The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell -
kirixchi
6. "Yes," said Tom bluntly, on opening the front door. "What d'you want?" Good Night, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian -
