I was told once a long time ago not to apologize for stories when I posted them, and ever since then I have tried so hard not to apologize that I frequently fail to explain, either. I feel like this story does require a little explanation, though (which is not to say an apology for still not being the story where Aral and Jole actually ... do anything related to being, for instance, alone in a room together).
In the process of plotting out the aforementioned story which this is not, I realized that I needed to pin down my ideas about who Lieutenant Jole is (for instance: what is his first name?) and what the hell it would be like to be a gay military officer on ~modern~ Barrayar. And then I thought of all my friends who have been through the process of getting a security clearance for a prospective job.
And then I thought, Oh, Hell.
Many many thanks to
iulia and
oliviacirce for beta and hand-holding.
Gen. Lt. Jole, Simon Illyan. 5500 words.
Arkady's gotten used to ImpSec the way a soldier gets used to being surrounded by deadly weapons.
